In the J/E forum we typically get a few posts that end up being spun hubs. Thought I might post this pic to show just how hard it can be to know just by looking.

This is a 100% proven spun hub...

This happens to be from a 50 hp mid 90s Evinrude...

notice there is little damage or twisting evident in the rubber.

if you look real close, just where the rubber meets the outer hub you will see a clean stripe. That's the only evidence. Many props with spun hubs don't exhibit any evidence. I post this as there is just that little bit of evidence.

This hub actually holds well til 3000 rpm on a 22' toon.... 20180419_195509-2268x3024.jpg

hope it helps someone...if not, a mod can delete it.

Good info, Jake.

When my hub spun, I could only get about 1200 RPM, just a fast idle and I was worried the prop would spin off. And I was 8 miles from the ramp - It was one slow return.

Looking at, the rubber looked better than your prop. It's hard to tell by looking and drawing the line is still the best way.

Oh, my prop was 50 years old, so it was no surprise, just aggravating!

And this is a reminder for me to take the spun prop to the prop shop for a spare to guarantee the new one will never fail.

not it looked like this that pic was when I removed it from the prop.Michigan wheel updated the hubs now but original vortex hubs could fall apart like mine did .I'm not alone in that issue it was a fault from the factory.

Think my hub is spun jake,lol?[IMG2=JSON]{"data-align":"none","data-size":"full","src":"https:\/\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4406\/36454426690_26391cc02a_c.jpg"**[/IMG2]

That's exactly why I don't like today's removable hubs.

I love the new hub inserts on pleasure craft outboards. So easy and cheap, and in most cases reliable. No need to send to a shop to get a new hub, I keep several in stock.

I believe they updated the hubs with new material.I too love the hub system as its very easy to change ,swap, hubs .My brp prop ,solas amita and omc sst are the old style pressed in type.So to be totally honest I think I have more old than new for my etec 60hp.
