You've got to try this... kind of intriguing, any way to explain this?

1. Key in the first 3 digit of your phone number into the calculator.
2. Multiply by 80.
3. Add 1.
4. Multiply by 250.
5. Plus last 4 digit of your phone number.
6. Plus last 4 digit of your phone number again.
7. Minus 250.
8. Divide by 2 at last.

Is this your handy phone number???

Re: phone math

 This is geeky, but this is why it works. I knew my degree would finally come in handy.

Assume x=first three digits of your number
y=last four digits of your number
then your number (z) is x*10000+y
for example: 123-4567 = 123x10000 + 4567=1234567

The formula they have you do can be defined as:
((80x + 1)250 + 2y - 250)/2 = z
MULTIPLY BY 2 YOU GET:
(80x+1)250 + 2y - 250 = 2Z
SOLVE THE FIRST PART YOU GET:
20000x+250+2y-250 = 2Z
CANCEL OUT THE 250 YOU GET:
20000x+2Y=2Z
DIVED OUT THE 2 YOU GET:
10000X+Y=Z

PRESTO!!!! This is what we defined above!!!!
