Got this e-mail today:

We recently noticed one or more attempts to log in to your eBay account
from a different IP address.
If you recently accessed your account while traveling, the unusual log in
attempts may have been initiated by you. However, if you did not initiate
the log ins, please visit eBay as soon as possible to check-up your
account information:

Thanks for your patience.
Sincerely,
eBay
----------------------------------------------------------------
Please do not reply to this e-mail. Mail sent to this address cannot be
answered.
Email ID PP32461

Seem's there ought to be a way to shut these people down. I'm tempted to pull up the website and fill it with false info. Are some people really dumb enough to respond with real info?

EDIT: I deleted the link since I don't know if there is anything dangerous on the other end.

Re: Phishing

Not sure but that actually looks genuine. Where (site address) does it send you when you click on the link in the original email?

Re: Phishing

That address is real but I think it is a phishing attemp. You know your name and password so I would not type it into anyone from any email ever.

Re: Phishing

yeah thats what made me think it was genuine-it wasn't asking for your name and password etc, just that you visit the site.

It's quite funny clicking on the links in the phishing emails-whatever the site looks like on the other end of the link it'll usually let you 'sign in' as any random (and usually quite insulting) name you want.

Re: Phishing

Could be phishing but the IP addresses are registered to ebay.

my.ebay.com. A 66.135.218.145
my.ebay.com. A 66.135.218.151
my.ebay.com. A 216.113.178.10
my.ebay.com. A 216.113.178.70

OrgName: eBay, Inc
OrgID: EBAY
Address: 2145 Hamilton Ave
City: San Jose
StateProv: CA
PostalCode: 95008
Country: US

NetRange: 216.113.160.0 - 216.113.191.255
CIDR: 216.113.160.0/19
NetName: EBAY-QA-IT-1

NetRange: 66.135.192.0 - 66.135.223.255
CIDR: 66.135.192.0/19
NetName: EBAY-1

And the login page is an https site and doesn't generate a certificate warning. You might want to contact ebay and follow-up on it. Someone may have cracked your password. I'd do it from a different system. If you have an IT group at work they've most likely provided secure systems.

I've gotten a lot of phishing emails lately and they all had 1 or more things in common.

1. The URL contained an IP address instead of a DNS registered name.

2. The login/registration site wasn't secure (http vs https).

3. Mozilla flagged a problem with the site certificate.

4. The domain name in the URL was registered to a different organization. I just got a phishing email from bill-earthlink.org telling me I needed to update my account information. bill-eartlink.org is registered to a lawer in New York. I also got one from "paypal" that brought me to a site registered to a mobile phone company in Korea.

Re: Phishing

Look in the "my messages" section on your "my ebay" page-it'll be repeated in there if it's genuine. I shoulda thought of that before!

Re: Phishing

I still think it's phishing. I am my own IT department and my computer is secure. I'm not going to worry about it until next time I try to buy something off e-bay, and when that time comes I will be going to e-bay's main page. If there really is an issue I'll find out then.

Theres no CC info on my ebay accout anyway - I like it that way. The only thing they will get is my e-mail address - they have that allready.

Just a warning - this is what phishing looks like - don't click on the links provided.

I once got an email from USBank asking me to update my account info - But I never did business with USBank b4.

Re: Phishing

What this amounts to is junk mail that has a stamp and junk mail that is just stuffed in your mail box. If it has a "stamp" the "postmaster" is obligated to deliver it. Before the internet I got on a porno mailing list. At the time I had minor children in the house and I told the postman not put that crap in my mail box, he just shrugged and said the postage is paid so I have to deliver it. The only choice I had was to just keep trashing it until they got tired of paying the postage. Needless to say, the damage was done as far as the gossips were concerned. If you visit a site for what ever reason you agree to the terms of that site. Kinda like opening your wallet before you walk into the store.... Not a day goes by that I don't get 3 calls from someone wanting to lend me money. My mail accounts are full of paypal, ebay and bank scams in general... I have no accounts with paypal ebay and any of the banks who send this mail. I am however on just about everybodies sucker list! :D

Re: Phishing

I agree it smells like phish. But it's a higher quality than what I usually get so if you haven't already done so it might be worth reporting it to ebay and see if they have anything to say about it. I also agree about not using the link in the email to do that.

I get an email from Earthlink every month telling me my credit card has expired and I need to update my account. The thing is I don't think it's phishing since my credit card has expired and been renewed several time since I first signed up with them but I can't bring myself to log in via the "click here" link in the email, because I'm not positive it isn't phishing. My account is still active because the credit card still honors the charge. If that changes I'll update my account information.

Re: Phishing

Sorry guys - for the rest of us here would it be possible to briefly explain "phishing" - obviously it's 'fishing' for information but why with a 'ph'? And what are the consequences if you click on the link or respond to the phish?

Re: Phishing

Phishing is just a cybergeek term. If you click on the link there may be a virus or spyware to steal your personal information on the page you get sent to. The page you will end up on will be a direct copy of that business's page-only it will ask for more info (credit card number, PIN, bank acc. details, home address etc)

It's a method of identity theft. If you respond to one with the correct information then expect your accounts to be cleaned out and credit cards applied for in your name. Business's will NEVER (no exception) ask for personal details via email.(and if they do then don't ever deal with them!)

Re: Phishing

I have no idea why they call it phishing. When it comes to the internet I'm just along for the ride so to speak, and about 10 years behind the leading edge. For example I'm still using dialup and have yet to see anything on the "web" that would make me want to spend $40+ a month to upgrade.

Re: Phishing

It's called fishing for obvoious reasons. there fishing for suckers. The "Ph" in front is pulled from a band called "phish". They had some good tunes but I haven't heard anything new from them recently. I don't think the band was ever involved in identity theft.

I think I wlll report this to ebay. Now, should I follow quitecat's link or is he a phisher too.... (just kidding.)

I Ken, feeling better I hope. ;) ;wink: The problem with this is that it difficult to tell whether that link was indeed the same link as the one received by brian. That's why the call it forgery. Further, that's is what sells Norton, McCaffee and other security software and why cookies are use is prevelant.
