Pertronix conversion

I realize Merc has been using electronic ignition for a long time but I was surprised to hear this from a guy who rebuilds distributers for a living.

Pertronix kits are not recommended for most boats, since they can cause a very damaging backfire when switching gears (transmission controled ignition cutout for safety.)

I found this interesting and was wondering if anyone had heard this before. My engine doesn't use s shift interrupt system, but was just curious if anyone else had heard of this issue.

Re: Pertronix conversion

I have seen those units on many engines, both OMC and Mercruiser all with shift interrupt systems. Never have heard a backfire of any kind, nor have I heard of a complaint of it.
Could be a problem with the automotive version that your distributor guy just assumed would be happening on the marine side as well.
