Personal radiation meter or Geiger counter?

what is the difference, and who has one? Geiger counter sounds more expensive, but i wouldnt mind something liketene one in the link if it's any good. Asking because supposedly radioactive rain fell only hours from me and want to test the rain to be safe

That thing could be useful in a controlled program to monitor Gammas and X-Rays. A Health Physicist would know how to use it. To anyone else it is a toy that could produce a false sense of security.

It would not respond to the most dangerous forms of radioactivity. . .Alpha and Beta radiation.

It is neither a Geiger counter nor a personal radiation monitor. It is a crystal scintillation detector/indicator.

Ive seen those things come and go several times over the last 30 years. It MAY hold some value for first responders in conjunction with calibrated instruments and people trained and qualified to use them.

If you're worried about radiaoctive rain, you're in really deep doo-doo if rainwater is reading 100mr/hr (min detection for the device referenced). If you really want some answers, contact the local branch of the Health Physics Society or a university with a Health Physics program.

Just out of curiosity, what are you talking aboat when you say radioactive rain? From where and when?

There is absolutely radioactivity in the world around us. The fact that it can be measured, does not necessarily mean that it will cause additional harm. Conversly, the fact that it's naturally occuring does not mean that it's benign.

We are facing a shortage of people interested in careers in radiation protection so I would encourage you to look further to see what programs are available to you. The Health Physics Society, NRRPT, and universities can all steer you toward a course of study that will get you the basics. You're close enough to Bruce Power and the Pickering and Darlington sites to even start with employment in the field. If you're really interested in radiation and how it works, by all means, please investigate further with legitimate study from recognized sources.

The industry (power and medical) is very supportive with scholorships and internships available from hundreds of companies and utilities.

I would be more worried about radon gas venting into my basement.

BTW, canada supplies a crud load of uranium/yellow cake for the worlds nuclear reactors, there are not to many places you can go out in western Canada (Northern Sask, Manitoba, Alberta and all BC) were there is not some radiation evident from mines.


(and if my brain cells are fully firing this morning you get lead from the decay of uranium and borium, and theres lot of lead out there!)

Ever wonder why most radation dectors are made in Canada ? Sentrol ,Accuray , Exploranium? I Take care of 6 sights Rail ,Truck , and 6 panel for 60 ton scrap trucks , Not all radiation is that harmfull its just time and exposure and the type of source . Every time we have heavy rain ,low clouds we get so called false readings mostly contained radon gas ,contamnated rain in concetrations in voids of trucks and always alarms in front of semis where radiator cooling fan blows into engine compartment . Detectors adjust themselfs to changing background continiously to help conteract . Radon gas is half life of bad source traped deep in earth , Just wait till OkiesTexins / go after oil and gas at Marcellious and Utica . Guess what that rock formation holds in radioactive elements ? and Im sure that waste will be dumped on ground for fill and be in our water supplies and workers lungs .

RBH when the flash count gets to high or one big one you have hit you head or sleeping to close to your glow in the dark alarm clock and need to change from trintiom sights on the pistol under your pillow .

Japanese , Russians , Americans would not lie to Public . Hell I just want my own little reactor steam turbin power station that will power my house for 50yrs like our Navy uses , heck homeland sucurity was so worried about suitcase dirty bombs , I promise to bury mine half way to china like your parents woud say when they saw the depth of fox holes we always got to dig before grandpa came down from Ohio and intertained us and disposed of all crab scraps . Still love crab cakes .

To answer your question, a Geiger counter measures the amount of radiation at any given time, where as a dosimeter shows cumulative radiation exposure.
