This is all I have in my garage at the moment and was looking at putting my Evinrude 35HP back together tonight. Because of where I live I don't have access to a lot of stuff.

I remember hearing that automotive sealant is bad on aluminum due to the chemical reaction.

Just wondering if Aviation stuff from permatex is aluminum safe. I also have access to some loctite 515 and Loctite #2.

What should I use? Will I be sorry if I use the aviation stuff?

I have the powerhead pulled. What would be a good product to use for sealing the crank off too?

Permatex Aviation is perfect for coating gaskets.

For sealing the crankcase halves you'll need OMC Gel Seal (it's Gel Seal II now).

Products similar to Gel Seal (anerobic sealants) are typically available from motorcycle shops.

Anerobic mean cures without oxygen? I think loctite makes a product (515?) for that. Don't have the crankcase apart so shouldn't need to worry. Its the powerhead to driveshaft that I am wondering about (looking down the leg at the splines and copper tube etc) Sorry if my terminology is wrong.

Thanks for the help boys.

Yes, that's what it means.

Powerhead (crankshaft to driveshaft typically has an O ring near the bottom of the splines and waterproof grease on the splines (no sealant). Failure to use grease means the driveshaft rusts solid to the the crankshaft (very bad).

Thanks Jim.

I did not see an o-ring when I pulled the powerhead but rather some whitish silicone like gunk. I wonder if its been off before and this was a farmer fix. I will check to see if everything is still present. Although looking on the fiche for the motor I can't seem to find the oring in the parts. Model E35RCRR.

All motors don't have the O ring deal. You would see a machined groove near the bottom of the splines if it used an O ring.

The whitish gunk is probably grease. Some of the stuff that comes with a waterpump kit fits that description.

Loctite #518 or permatex #51813. Most auto parts stores can order the permatex takes a day or so. Aviation works great just about everywhere else. Triple guard grease has got to be the best I have ever used. My advice.....don't rush it. Give yourself a week instead of a night.
