Wondering how a GS259 performs on the ocean and will any adjustments be necessary to run this same boat on a mountain lake(elevation 7000 ft.)??

Re: performance questions

divesup,

For what it's worth, I'll drop in my two cents.

I am still considering the purchase of a GS279 and asked about a GS259 that my local Glastron dealer also had in stock (less deck space to carry people, but it was cheaper...so...I asked). His take on things was that the 279 would offer a better ride even in the Bay "Chop" (here in NJ, Barnegat, before even getting to the Ocean). Basically said the 279 gave a better ride (but he could also have been steering me towards the more expensive boat !).

I test drove a Crownline 250 over the weekend (more or less "in between" the 259 and 279) and in choppy bay seas... I was less than impressed (less deadrise than the Glastrons, but not by much). The Crownline dealer basically said something along the lines of "better ride in the bowrider over "chop" but better stability in the Cruiser when anchored and enjoying the day.

I've been boating for about 6 seasons now, so I wouldn't necessarily call myself a seasoned boater...yet.

But if you're asking about a Lake - where the waters are presumed to be mostly calm - I would assume even a 259 would be fine, as compared to any Tidal waters (I assume its not a Lake like Lake Michigan, for example).

I posted a couple of times here as well (see this Glastron forum) and those also went unanswered (frustrating and aggravating, to say the least, can't even get an opinion out of anyone, it seems). When I first found this forum, it looked promising...now, not so much, when I actually tried to use it. I'll keep trying, but it seems pretty dead here.

Good luck in your selection.

Re: performance questions

Thanks Dayboater,
Yeah I agree with you about the forum, can be frustrating. The 279 is a very nice boat and if I was to leave my boat in a slip I would rather have the bigger boat. The reason I was thinking about the 259 is for the trailering factor, cruising it on the ocean one weekend, cruising a lake the next. Also the cheaper price helps.
As far as the chop, I think either boat would do fine, the 279 no doubt would be a more comfortable ride. I was just curious if these engines (Mercruiser) would require any adjustments for the elevation change. I've never owned one of these.
Good luck, let me know if you get that boat and how she runs!

Re: performance questions

If whatever you buy is fuel injected, you will not need to make any engine changes to run at 7000 feet. You will however have to reprop (lower pitch) to get the engine up on its power curve. You lose a lot of power at that altitude. If the engine is carbureted, it will need to be rejetted for that altitude. Especially going from sea level to 7000 feet.
