Don't know anything about it other than it's on tournament ski boats. Both my neighbor and my nephew have it on their ski boats(both are carbs), and neither one is working.

Nephew's Mastercraft was on his(not working) when he bought the boat used. Neighbor's Ski Nautique was factory installed when he bought boat new. His quit working about 3 seasons ago. Even though his boy wanted it repaired for competition use, he decided the repair cost was too much.

Perfectpass has nothing to do with with the efi system of the engine, It will just hook up to the throttle cable.

Make sure you check out the GPS style it's so much easier to install then using a transducer type with a paddle wheel and drilling a hole in the bottom of the boat, And last time I checked the GPS system was cheaper also. It's called the star gazer.

Even though the company is in canada the tech support guys are really nice and very helpful.

Perfect Pass is a towing system to provide consistent pulls for slolam skiing/wakeboarding. I don't think it would be cost-effective to put it on many boats that didn't come equipped with it from the factory. Isn't it GPS-based as far as the speed-tracking? Perfect Pass has sort of become the new standard over the old version which regulated speed based on paddle-wheel/pitot sensors.

That's to bad, Sometimes they just need to be reset.

This link has some troubleshooting tips in it, And if that does not work out then have them call perfectpass, It would be worth a try anyways.;)

Re: Perfect Pass Cruise control

I purchased a four Winns Horizon 200 and installed a Perfect Pass unit myself. It took about 3 hours. the unit I installed connects at the point the throttle cable connects to the throttle body in my case but I am sure it would work on a carb just as well. I was on business in Nova Scotia and went to their office. They were very helpful and customer service was great. I gave them the wrong diameter for the controller (which replaces the speedo). They sent a new one in the mail and it arrived within days. We used it all summer and I think it's great. I can ski and my wife can drive the boat at a very steady speed. I consider it a great investment and my family would agree.

Re: Perfect Pass Cruise control

I know this post is getting a little old, but I'm sure "perfectpass" is searched on a semi-regular basis, and there seems to be little info on it in these forums.

To go back to the original poster's question, YES, it can be installed on essentially any carb'd boat, 4.3L or larger, according to PerfectPass. It seems they do not have a setup for 3.0's, but I guess I don't understand why...it's a pretty generic setup with the way it hooks up to the carb.

Anywho....

I will be installing their Stargazer GPS-based system on my 1999 Stingray with 5.0L carb'd Volvo in the next month or so, and I was wondering what I will be getting into. I found the link below with some basic info and a few nice pics of what to expect. I found it informative. It's missing a pic of the GPS antenna install itself, but otherwise it gives a pretty good snapshot of what the system is, how it will need to be installed, and how it will look after installation. These pics show a true inboard ski boat (Tige) with a center mount motor...but a Chevy V8 is a Chevy V8 no matter how you slice it...so it shouldn't be much different putting the same system on most any I/O...Mercruiser or Volvo. PerfectPass specifically markets this product to I/O owners just as much as it does inboard owners.

I had no idea the servo motor in the engine compartment was so....large....for lack of a better word. And the fact that it clamps to the coolant hoses seems odd, but I guess it works. And I also didn't make the connection in my brain that this unit simply replaces the speedo in the dash, which is nice since my dash has absolutely ZERO space to add another gauge anywhere and I was struggling with where the PP control gauge/buttons might be mounted. I guess you can't beat the stock speedo hole for that! Problem solved! I also didn't realize until recently that the gauge also provides a small digital tach readout...likely more accurate than most boat tachs, a nice bonus.

Just sharing, in case others might have a small eureka moment by looking at these pics:

Here's PerfectPass's instructions for installing on any boat with a mechanical throttle linkage (EFI or Carb doesn't matter):
http://www.perfectpass.com/download/usersmanuals/StarGazer-WakeEdition-Mechanical.pdf

I'm choking a little bit on the $1,200-ish+ price tag, but anyone who has experienced pulling an aggressive wakeboarder behind an I/O while trying to hold a steady low speed and perfect wake (which is essentially an IMPOSSIBLE combination to achieve and maintain for longer than 5 seconds) knows how valuable a system like this would be in terms of preventing rider fatigue/driver frustration, and adding a TON of enjoyment to a sport. So I'm looking forward to buying and installing, and REALLY looking forward to using. Programming individual names of skiers and boarders with custom speeds to within 0.1 MPH will be stellar. Driver/rider won't even need to remember their favorite speed anymore...just select your name from the menu before jumping in the water! I will report back with my experiences after the fact, probably sometime this June after I get a chance to try it out a few times first.

Re: Perfect Pass Cruise control

Got it in the mail today, got 'er installed in 3 to 4 hours. Would have been faster except for one minor problem which I'll mention below. Attached are a few quick pics to give others an idea of what to expect. Beyond what you see in the pics it's just running some wires around the boat and drilling a small hole or two in the dash area to be able to set the receiver antenna somewhere up there near the windshield. Overall it appears to be a very high quality unit, and I am REALLY looking forward to using it. Besides the obvious benefit of the speed control for water sports, now having an on-board digital tach and a GPS-based speedo on board will be SWEET, as I have never really trusted my factory gauges.

I had one minor snafu on my 1999 Volvo Penta 5.0 GL with 2 bbl carb...sort of a different linkage hookup that didn't match up with any of their installation instructions. So I called the company, and got INSTANT service on the phone. I emailed them some quick pics of my setup, he called me back within 10 minutes and said he hadn't quite seen one like this before, and so then we bounced a few ideas off each other. In the end he offered to make me a custom bracket and rush it out to me no charge if I sent him a few measurements. Turns out I was able to modify his provided bracket in the kit with a hacksaw and grinder and it worked out great, only added about 20 minutes to the project, and I didn't have to wait for him to ship me a special part.

Their customer/tech service was absolutely OUTSTANDING. All is pending a water test and a long summer of perfectly maintained wakeboarding speed, but based on my installation experience alone I can confidently recommend this product!

Re: Perfect Pass Cruise control

I'm gonna bump this one last time with a full season review. I used the Perfectpass system all summer long for wakeboarding and water-skiing. Works absolutely PERFECT. Rookie and experienced drivers alike LOVE it. Riders love it even MORE because the boat pull is exactly the same at all times. I have found that the slalom/rpm mode is pretty much unnecessary for our purposes...we just leave it in the wakeboard/gps mode for everthing. Even when pulling a slalomer thru the buoys at about 32 mph, it held perfectly. We usually wakeboard, and speeds anywhere from 15 mph to 26 mph can be held PERFECT to satisfy all riders, with any amount of ballast on board. No more falling on and off plane at ANY speed.

First test run was a little "surgy". Instructions show how to adjust the response speed very clearly if this is experienced. After adjustment at the dash one time, it never surged again. We have found it a little cumbersome to add names and use the memory feature to save speeds, etc. So with our group we decide it's just a simple matter of each rider requesting his preferred speed and we just use the up & down buttons to select the exact speed before the run. Takes about 3 seconds. So super easy I think even a monkey can drive it....safety is improved because drivers eyes are on the lake 100% of the time and never looking at the speedo. Spouses are happier with each other's driving performance and grumpiness has been reduced to zero.

On occasion during hard 180 degree turns (running back & forth along a smooth shoreline as a windbreak) the system gets a little confused and it cancels, slowing the boat. A simple throttle bump resets the "beep beep" and it takes over again. This is the only time it occurs, and only in the sharpest of high-speed U-turns. A very minor inconvenience we quickly learned to expect as a driver. Wider turns are problem-free and open water running is perfect.

The integrated digital tach is a sweet feature...I'm a bit of a motorhead and have modded my engine for some performance, so having a tach that reads digitally to 10 rpm increments is an awesome tuning tool. I checked it against my calibrated shop tach and it is within 10 rpm of accurate. Speeds can be set at 0.2 mph increments. Digital clock is kinda nice, and digital accurate GPS speedometer is really cool...it always displays current speed and rpm whether the perfect pass is "on" or not.

Oh...and my comment above referenced a 2bbl carb. I did install it on that system at first and used it for a while, and mid-summer I upgraded to a 4 bbl Holley and the system swapped over flawlessly. Works the same...of course my factory 2bbl was also a Holley so very little difference in linkage.

I have had not one technical problem...it works as good as new. I absolutely love the product...we even engage it when just cruising around sightseeing. Best investment I have EVER made in this boat, hands-down. If you're on the fence, INVEST in this product.
