hi all...

my 82 50hp mariner is back together for the fifth time. i couldnt get the telltale pee stream after an water pump assy change. turns out i just didnt wait long enough after starting. after about thirty seconds or more, it started flowing. however, at an idle it drops to almost nothing, and percolates out, a little at a time (hooked up to a flush muff in the driveway). i have been told it will do better in the water, and i shouldnt be concerned. the water that comes out is hot, and steams when it comes out.

should i be concerned? dont have a temp gauge. do they still sell those melt sticks to determine engine temp?

looking for reassurance for a ten day fishing trip coming up...

thanks again!

Re: percolating

Hi,

If you are running the engine from a well it will act like that at times.
Also I have seen that with a small diameter water hose and city water.
The pump can suck hoses dry under these conditions.
You could try pulling the prop and putting it in a garbage can full of water to run it and see if it is any better.
If there is a brass plug in you rear water jacket, part no 9 http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury_parts/275/100.cfm
You could take it out and see if you have solid water or a mix coming out of it.
I would get a 1/8"pipe brass nipple and push a clear hose on it about a foot long to watch the water come out of the block. Hold the hose up into the air so you can see if you have a clean water flow or air and water mix.
