Re: Penta SX Trim Cylinder Rebuild
Thank you, I appreciate your response.
The local marinas stated they do the same and that the O-rings will do the job of sealing.
There was one suggestion to use Permatex # 3 anti siezing for aviation/ marine applications on the end cap threads if the boat is in salt water so the parts do not freeze together.
I just finished putting it back together and bleeding the system. SO far so good.
Permatex #3 sounds like a great idea, I should have used that, when I resealed my cylinders last year.
I have replaced my Volvo Penta 290 outdrive with an SX, and was worried that the outdrive was going to crush the swim platform, when trimmed all the way up. So when I overhauled the transom/outdrive last year, prior to installing, I resealed the cylinders and installed an original trim limiter kit in them.
When I installed the complete transom/outdrive I was exicted to see how much clearance there was between the outdrive and the swim platform, when trimmed all the way up. It turned out that the trim limiter kit was not needed anyway.
So I figured that I could easily screw off the end caps, and remove the trim limiter. BUT, when I removed the end cap on the first cylinder, the O-ring was destroyed!
The boat has not even been in the water. But somehow, the o-rings have bonded to the aluminium in this short period of time (since september 2011), and therefore was destroyed when I dismantled the cylinder.
Any grease would have prevented this.
When I dismantled the cylinders last September, the old o-rings in the end caps, came out fine. I believe that they have never been touched, since 1995. So it's a bit strange that after only 3/4 year, they new ones are destroyed when taken apart.
