Penta dps

I have a 1998 maxum 2300sc with a 5.0 Ford Ho 260 hp.I have what I believe is a 1999 volvo penta dps . It has a 1.98 gear ratio.
This was mounted behind a 7.4 gl. Is this too much of a gear ratio?
I got the 7.4 and it is rated at 340 hp but the engine needs all electric (involved in a fire) so is it worth it to run the little 302 or should I rebuild 7.4 and run it. I guess the main question is will the 302 plane my boat out with the dps?

Howdy,

Is it a carbureted engine? If so, I would rewire the 454 and use it.

You'll love the increased performance. If it's injected, it might be cost prohibitive to replace the electronic injection components that were burned.

The 302 might work just fine with different props. A VP guy should be able to tell you if that drive was used with a small block.....I'm assuming that you've determined that the transom shield & flywheel housing is compatible with the other engine/drive etc...
