Not another cheap vs premium 2 stroke oil post! This ones different.
After reading all of the other discussions I am leaning towards either Pennzoil Synthetic Blend or Quicksilver Premium. I have my 15hp Mercury coming in the mail from iboats, and want to get opinions on these two oils. No matter the price, which one do people recommend and why? Anyone have experience with both?
I want something that will keep my motor running long and clean. If a synthetic blend is cleaner and has less carbon, I'd like to hear from personal experience and not just hearsay. Yes its a small outboard and I probably shouldn't worry too much, but I like to keep my things in the best possible shape, which is why a trust Mobil 1 in my car.
thanks for the input guys...

They are both 100% dino oils.
The "synthetic" in Pennzoil's blend is group III (hydrocracked petroleum) oil.

Find an August 2000 issue of Bass and Walleye Boats magazine. In it they have an article on those oils, along with lab analysis for comparison.

Don't confuse the less expensive Quicksilver Premium with the better Quicksilver Premium Plus oil.

Oilman, is there fully synthetic a group III also??? Group III is a good base stock, but still not up to a synthetic!

Is this like Castrol Syntec claiming to be a synthetic also??

Sea Horse: Why dont you post the results for us!! Cant come up with one of those magazines!

LubeDude

Re: Pennzoil Blend vs. Quicksilver Premium

The Pennzoil synthetic blend is called that because it uses the polyisobutylene additive which cuts down on smoke. The FICHT Ram oil and Yamaha 2-M also use the same "PIB" additive in large concentrations. FICHT Ram oil seems to have a lot less smoke output than those other 2 oils.

I got in trouble some years back about posting copyrighted material, plus it would take a lot of typing and spacing to make up the table of ingredients for the different oils. You can go to
https://www.kable.com/pub/bawb/subServices.asp
and click on request customer service and leave a message asking for the backissue.

Re: Pennzoil Blend vs. Quicksilver Premium

I used Mercury Quicksilver until the price jumped dramatically in my area. I switched to Penzoil Synthetic blend. It seems to me that the Penzoil smokes more. It's just my observation, I have no measurements to back this up. I have no problems with plug fouling with the Penzoil, so I guess it's OK. I wish the price of the Quicksilver would drop.

RJS, thanks for the personal experience. it seems you would prefer the quicksilver then. did you use the premium or premium plus?

on another oil note, I ran accross an interesting oil on ebay and after searching it seems to warrant a closer inspection. Its called Blue Marble and actually has lived up to its performance claims in tests. info can be found at http://www.nulubes.com/ or http://www.bluemarblecanada.com
anyone used this oil before? most snake oils don't live up to claims when tested by magazines like this one has. still I'd be hesitant b/c of lack of a TC-W3 rating.

Surfstar,

I used the Premium oil. I didn't consider the plus because I was happy with the Premium and the plus was more money.

Beware of statments like this as seen on the web site you linked:

"The only way that manufacturers can require that you use their oil to maintain its factory warranty is if they furnish the oil to you free of charge during the warranty period."

That is a "halfway" correct statement. The mfgs cannot specify a brand without providing oil but they CAN spec grades, etc..

BillP,

You are correct, but have you ever noticed that no one complains about the "factory only" proprietary gearcase oil? As far as I know, only Yamaha and Suzuki say 90 hypoid GL-4, all the others say their brand only. How come people aren't making a stink about that?

Re: Pennzoil Blend vs. Quicksilver Premium

seahorse,
I don't know whats up with the gearcase oil. Maybe they are all so close (except for the GL5) that it really doesn't matter.

To make it even more confusing, my 1996 50hp 4 stoke Mariner operators manual just says to change the gearcase oil and gives quantity. It has zero specs for type oil or brand. Weird but true. This makes it tough to follow mfg specs (hehehe). I guess even snake oil is ok! I looked in a Clymer to see what was recommended and purchased Quicksilver at 2x the price just to have piece of mind.

Re: Pennzoil Blend vs. Quicksilver Premium

None of the different gear oils are close in viscosity or formula, except for the 90W ones. For example, the Bombardier (OMC) Ultra-HPF says with 10% water mixed with it, it still protects better than a hypoid oil does. Merc's hi-perfomance lube is different yet.
