Man can these birds eat some fish!they form a giant circle and close it in,herding the fish into a pin(for lack of better words),and chow down.Non-stop,all day,all night.I think these birds are killing the fishing here,The fishing has gotten worse and worse over the years,as more and more of these birds show up.
I blame these birds,am I wrong?

Pelicans in my neck of the woods will land on your boat and beg for hand-outs... I've had it happen a few times at various boat ramps... I won't feed em, but some folks do...

Fish where the birds are fishin', Fixin... Thats what I do... ;)

The Pelicans up here taint that friendly--you get close to the them and you'll have a squadron of bombers over your head.

I think you're on to something. I've seen flocks of 'em just like in your picture on one of the big lakes down here. They're big enough to eat a three-pound bass. I bet they really do affect the fishery.

You know what they say about the pelican, his beak can hold more than his belly can!

They have been know to collaberate with cormarants, the pelicans herd the fish and the cormarants dive and catch, they will put a fish into the pelicans mouth as payment for services rendered. Smart birds.

Aldo

A bird voluntarily giving up food to another bird (other than offspring)? That's real hard to swallow (pardon the puns). :)

I have heard of crows placing pecans & other nuts on the street & waiting for cars to smash 'em so they can get at the meat. In Japan researchers have documented that birds (pigeons I think) eating nuts they've placed on the street will take off when the traffic light changes, not waiting on the cars to start moving.

Re: Pelicans

Alot of what the pelicans eat are "trash" fish --ones we don't feel are good to eat or fish for. Yes they do get some our game fish but then --who said they are OURS?

What makes a paticular fish more the pelican's than mine? Last time I checked we were at the top of the food chain.

We may be at the top of the food chain, but when dead the bugs at the bottom of that same food chain will be munching on us.......

American pelicans.
We are seeing more and more of them here on Southern
Alberta waters. In the last 10 or 15 years they
seem to stay longer and arrive earlier. They Feed out of
the Bow river and seem to very much like
our reservoirs. Actually I think they like our fish.
I wonder if they would make descent table fair. Maybe
they would make a good filler
from turkey to goose season. ;)

Re: Pelicans

pelicans are indeed getting to be a pest in a lot of countries (Australia included) they have invaded lakes and rivers where they were previously unheard of, pretty funny at our local ramp when some tourist "sneaks" up on them to take a close up shot, only to discover that a pelican will just as happily take a "snap" at a camera just as much as it will a fish, seen a couple cameras swallowed, hehe the now cameraless tourist does not laugh though, sometimes they will just play with the camera till they decide it is not edible and spit it out, usually over the water haha

Re: Pelicans

Pelicans are few and far between here but the comerants are another story. Once nearly extinct and therfore a protected species there numbers have rebounded to a point on Leech Lake Mn that they have granted permision for the feds to kill 3000 this year. The population is estimated at 5000 birds on one lake with an estimated diet of 15,000 lbs of fish a day. They have decimated the walleye population to the point that the Mn DNR is the ones behind the eradication. It is underway as we speak using high powered air rifles.
