Someone once told me that if the paint is peeling or blistering on an outboard, it probably overheats.

Is this true? What else would cause the paint to peel?

Thanks!

Corrosion will do it too. Once had a mid-80s Mercury (actually a Yamaha) that shed almost all it's paint on the lower unit and leg.
Of course, if it's the engine itself that's peeling...

Re: Peeling paint

I should have been more specific and said "paint on the cowling".

Re: Peeling paint

It has nothing to do with heat. I have two OMC SeaDrives that are painted metalic charcoal. Every couple of months I need to go after the blisters with sandpaper & sprey paint - even if the boat has not left the trailer. I get blisters only on the cover. I assume that it is due to the paint not bonding to the fiberglass.
