I was given some advice to drill a hole in the leg of the motor above the waterline so that water spraying out would ensure the water pump was always working properly. do you guys recomend this and if you do, where the heck do you drill without damaging anything.

the motor is a 1969 55hp johnson

thanx in advance. oh and please excuse the title hahaha

Re: pee hole

When you add a tell-tale, you want the outlet as high on the engine block as possible to help keep air out of the cooling circuits.

Then you need a 1/8 inch i.d. threaded nipple, part 321886, some hose and the overboard indicator nipple part 321885 that goes through the floor of the lower cowl.

You need a drill, a tap, some gasket sealer.

When you drill and tap the block, put heavy grease on the bit to catch the filings so that they will not get in the engine.

Put a stop on the bit so you go through the outer surface but not into the cylinder wall. This is best done with the cylinder head removed so that you can see what you are doing.

Re: pee hole

You already have a pump indicater. It is the two big holes on the back of the midsection, just below the powerhead. Water should be spraying out there when it is running.
