pcv valve on mercruiser 140hp

If I take the pcv valve out of the engine, the engine fires up and runs nicely. If I put it back in, it slows then stalls the engine, making it near impossible to restart. The valve has no insides to it, so there is air blowing softly, but contiously, back into the air arrestor. Should there actually be something inside the pcv valve? Should there be this much air coming back out of the engine case? What do I need to do?
Thanks
Tom

The 140's didn't have PCV valves in them, just a hose connection.

had a V6 that started doing the same thing, found a broken outer valve spring. but the actual problem was excessive moisture in that blowby.
replaced the spring, ran it under load to get rid of the moisture and problem solved.

Did not run the boat last year, going to put it in the lake tomorrow and run her. we'll see how she acts after. Hopefully that's all it needs. Thanks
