Hey guys --- I've been asking this question around and haven't gotten what I feel like is a very good explanation, so I thought I would try here.

I have a 1989 Supra Saltare 23' Wakeboard boat. It has a 454 marinized by PCM marine. I've only owned it less than a year and probably have about 20 hours on it.

At the beginning of this season there was a loud clicking coming from the #1/#3 cylinder area, so I pulled the valve covers and found a very loose rocker arm. I knew this couldn't have loosened up on its own so I pulled the intake and found that the lifter for that valve was missing a good 1/3" of material on the bottom. I tried going to cheap route and replaced all the lifters. The engine ran ok for a few hours and then started clicking again. This time I found a bent push-rod and several DIFFERENT lifters that were completely jacked. At this point I decided that I had so much metal in my oil and that I just needed to pull the engine and get a look at the bottom end.

Several people expected that I would find evidence of oil starvation after I pulled the heads. The heads look great, and the cylinders look brand new. There is no evidence of excessive heat or lack of oil, or oil contamination except that the lifters were all destroyed.

Right now the engine is completely pulled and I know that I need a new cam. The cam I pulled out of there seems like it may be the wrong one: http://www.cranecams.com/?show=brow...-454 C.I.&partNumber=133901&partType=camshaft

What should my next steps be? I don't want to put everything together with new lifters and cam just to find out that I haven't found the real problem. Any help would be really appreciated.

Rob

Re: PCM 454 Stumper!

With metal from a dead lifter and a bad cam floating around in the engine, I can't imagine the bearings being any good. I would sure look at all the bearings, crank, oil pump, and anything else that moves and check for scoring or wear.
