Going to Patoka tomorrow, haven't been there in ages. Can someone give me the rundown on the ramps there?
Where are they, and which are geared toward pleasure boats, and which are primarily fishing?

If you know of an online link that has the info thats great too....I found a couple sites, but they offer no ramp information....

Thanks in advance...

Re: Patoka ramp recommendation?

Hello Baketech.

I have been fishing and boating at Patoka for many years, so I will try to give you some helpful feedback.

Little Patoka ramp - Located off of SR64 in Taswell, take high chapel road, and follow the signs - Small ramp, good fishing and not too far from an unlimited speed zone. This ramp gets a lot of pressure, so I usually avoid it.

Osborn Ramp - Located off of SR145. - This is a fairly new ramp, you will be launching into a 10 mph zone. If you go right, you will be heading toward unlimited speed, go left, and you will be heading back towards Walls Lake ramp, and some good fishing. I have never launched from this ramp, even though I fish the areas around it frequently. The ramp is very small. It has a nice dock though.

South Ramp - Located off of SR164 in the Newton Stewart recreation area, you must pass through the main gate, and pay to enter and launch, (if you don't have the yearly pass. I believe it is like $2.oo, and $5.00) - Largest ramp at the lake. Great place for watersports, and not to far from good fishing. Many people use this ramp, and the water gets a little choppy on the weekends. If there are any tournaments happening at the lake, they will be using this ramp. I usually avoid this ramp also.

Newton Stewart ramp - Located just past the South ramp in the Newton Stewart recreation area also, you will have to pass the campground. - This is the ramp that I use the most. If you go left off of the ramp, you will be heading to the largest part of the lake and the unlimited speed. If you go right, you will have numerous fishing opportunities. This ramp is very large, and doesn't get the pressure as some of the other ones.

Painter Creek ramp - Located off of SR145, the ramp sits right next to the road, hard to miss.
I really like this ramp too. Good fishing, and not far from unlimited speed. Only problem is the ramp is pretty small, and gets heavy use on the weekends.

Walls Lake ramp - Located off of SR145, take Newton Stewart Paoli road south, and follow the signs. - Strictly a fishing ramp. Located deep in a 10 mph zone. Probably the best fishing at the lake, no place to pleasure boat though. Ramp is really small too. I highly recommend if you just want to fish.

South Lick Forth ramp - Located off of SR164, right next to the road, really hard to miss. - This is another strictly fishing ramp. Good fishing but no place to pleasure boat. Small ramp too. Heavy pressure on the weekends.

Lick Forth ramp - Located off of SR545, take 175 north and follow the signs. I have never launched from this ramp. Good for pleasure boating and fishing. I don't know how much pressure this ramp receives.

Jackson Ramp - I am not for sure of the best way to get to this ramp as I have never launched from here. This is strictly a pleasure boating ramp. Located in the largest section of the lake.

Sorry this was so long. I hope I have been of some help. I will be at Patoka this weekend with the family.

Have a safe trip! :)

Re: Patoka ramp recommendation?

We had a great time...weather was as close to perfect as it gets in Indiana... :)

Used your information, and chose the Newton Stewart ramp, because we it was a good place to meet a guest. Plus it was close to a marina where I picked up a good map of the lake.

Ramp was quiet, only 2-3 boats at a time....a bit choppy because it was on the main channel, but not too bad.

Thanks Again

Glad to hear you had a good time, and glad I could help.
I took the family to Patoka Saturday, we had a great time too. You are right, the weather was perfect for this time of year. We launched off of the Newton Stewart ramp also........Heck, we may have seen you guys up there. I am sure we will be back up there this weekend.
We love Patoka Lake. I have been fishing the lake since it was impounded. The most beautiful lake in Indiana.

Nice "talking" to you Baketech.....Take care... :D

Re: Patoka ramp recommendation?

Sorry to drag this thread out....but you are correct about the scenery there.
I had forgotten how beautiful that lake is. Water was really clear, but just a tad chilly for late June.

We spent a lot of time just anchored out, taking in the scenery and summer air...almost all the boats we saw were in the 14-24ft range which was nice for keeping the chop to a reasonable level even though it was a busy day.

I wish it was a bit closer...I live up in Columbus, so its just over 2 hours...

Stay Safe
