Parts needed for long shaft to X-long shaft conversion?

What I presently have: Pair of OMC 1984 1.6L (115 hp) Sea Drive engines with 25" shafts. Good powerheads and good lower units. Stuck thermostats, badly corroded steering arms, and all the parts are stuck together from saltwater corrosion.

What I envision ending up with: Pair of Johnny-Rude 115 hp 25" shaft outboards with trim/tilt on an outboard bracket.

What's available at a really good deal: Pair of Johnson 115 hp engines with 20" shafts, power trim/tilt, good powerheads, one good lower unit and one blown lower unit.

The unknown: Don't know if the Johnsons are crossflows or loopers. Don't yet know their year of manufacture. Appears from the part charts that Johnson 115hp's are crossflows. I have been told by knowledgeable folk on this forum that the Sea Drives are crossflows and the part charts bear this out, too.

Upon visual examination, it appears that the parts I'll need to keep to end up with 25" motors are: Lower unit (due to the 25" shifter rod and drive shaft), 25" mid-section, and water tube. Am I forgetting anything or overlooking something?

The 84 115's are crossflows. Crossflow 115's continued to be made through 1998. From 1995 on OMC also made 115's in the looper configuration. They made both types for a number of years, so you need to closely check the model numbers before purchasing.

Re: Parts needed for long shaft to X-long shaft conversion?

you have four good power heads and only 25" sea drive lower units..

I saw a sea drive for the first time last week and the lower unit looked to be an animal all its own!!!!

do you think a sea drive lower unit will fit onto an outboard midsection??????

from what i saw, id find it hard to believe..

gonna follow this thread and see where it leads..

those sea drives are really really different than an outboard!!!

maybe under the cover the block is the same..who knows

The stock 25" drive on the 1984 1.6 Sea Drive was part #0394625, which was a standard drive number used on both Evinrude and Johnson 25" crossflow V4 models in 1984 and 1985.

That also means that they are compatible with most 25" drives of that size used on the V4 crossflow motors between 1979 and 1991.
