I cranked my new little '79 Johnson Seahorse 2HP and it ran fine EXCEPT it pumped no water whatsoever. So I took the lower unit off and sure enough, the impeller looked like some sort of new-age ear ring.Lots of corrosion, but the water pump housing and the screws all came out fine. The water tube was full of goop. Blew that out with air.I cleaned everything up in anticipation of the new impeller which I ordered today. Here's what I've noticed. On most of the OEM outboards, there is a small, circular metal plate under the impeller itself. This one had nothing.Looks like it never did.I don't have the manual for this particular year motor. Is this normal? Did somebody leave something out at some point? This motor is very tiny and VERY simple. Not sure if the plate was ever there to begin with.I'm a bit concerned.Lower unit gears all look cherry.DRive shaft was rusted out the yazoo, but it's nice and shiny now.A tiny bit of water was in the lower unit oil.
I do have a new seal coming with the impeller, so no big deal. That plate really does worry me, however.
The outboard almost looks like it was in salt water at some point, due to the corrosion in certain places. I find that odd considering it came from Wisconsin??
Anybody want to calm me concerning this "missing" plate?? I'm ready to mount this little guy on my canoe.
