Hope someone can help, I went to do my water pump impeller on my Mercruiser Alpha 1 Gen 2 stern drive and a part fell out and to the ground when I was separating the lower unit from the upper unit. I don't have a clue what it is or where it goes.

I checked numerous part diagrams for upper and lower units and I can't find a thing, I am not even sure this part belongs to the out drive, who ever serviced this outdrive last didn't do a good job as the shaft has a wear ring around it from rubbing on the water pump impeller housing and the seal that goes right above the water pump impeller housing was missing and nowhere to be found.

Check the pics, The part has a removable gasket on one side and nothing on the other side, hopefully someone knows what it is or where it goes? Thanks!!

We'll need your "engine" info to help you find the correct part number. Serial number is usually best.

WOW!! I bought the boat with a bad motor, the owner told me the engine block was cracked due to over heating and had water in the oil and I confirmed both. I replaced the motor with a new motor I bought back in 2013 for my old boat. The bad motor is in my garage, the serial number is

M380447

Thanks!

Hey Guys, I did some searching, I think you guys hit the nail on the head, It looks exactly like part of the exhaust flapper. THANK U!!! I would not have thought to look at the exhaust system, Looks like I gotta take the riser off to get it done, and to think I was almost done.

Thanks a million.

Check for the other half, it may still be hanging on the center pin, or could be in the exhaust. When the engine overheated there was no cooling water being dumped into the exhaust, it burnt the rubber coating off and the shutter fell apart. When you take the riser off check the condition of the engine exhaust bellows, they may have been damaged too. Check the water pocket cover in the outdrive to make sure it has not been damaged by heat. Lastly the hot exhaust also was blowing past the pump, so make sure it is in real good shape, being stainless it should be OK.

Stonyloam, pretty funny you mentioned the exhaust bellows cause it was indeed damaged, I replaced it a few days ago, I thought it was just normal wear and tear, guess not, I will check everything you mentioned. Thanks!! I appreciate it.
