Part 2-Mercuiser carburation problem?

Here is a follow-up to my earlier topic that got a lot of helpful replies. Here’s what I checked before pulling the Quadra-Jet:
>choke is opening fully
>fuel filters are clean
>volume of fuel pump seemed okay
>no fuel leaks around carb gaskets
>no dripping of the booster venturis at idle
>I did tighten some of the screws on the top of the carb but it didn’t seem to help

The problem has been this: the boat starts and warms up fine while running on a hose. When it’s on the water, it bogs severely at full (even half) throttle. It loads up to the point where it might not start again. Once again, it is a 1989 Mercrusier Alpha One 5.0 LX.

I’ve pulled the carb and here is what I found. The two screws that hold the throttle body to the float bowl body were so loose that they almost fell out. The base gasket is the only thing that kept them out of the engine. Using the WD-40 trick, I found a small vacuum leak at the secondary throttle linkage. I also found that one of the inner air bleed tubes was blocked with crud. I don’t know if it’s relevant but the idle mixture screws were very different, one was at 3 turns, the other at 6 turns. I am currently installing a rebuilt kit and a new brass float.

Can these issues cause the performance problems I’ve been having? If not, where do I look next? And finally, what, if anything should I do about the leak around the throttle linkage?

Thanks again, JJR.

Put it all back together... should be fine, make sure you replace accelerator pump, make sure timing is on the nose... you'll be screaming down the lake in no time... as for the screws in base to air bowl of carb, sue a little loctite on threads & they won't ver come out again until you take them out!!!

Good Luck & keep us posted.

You got a good start, John...whenyou get the carb back on, like foneman says, shoot the timing...should have 8 degrees with the idle speed LOW...600 rpm or less...

Hi John Jr,
You mentioned the "WD-40 trick" when working with carbs. What is it?

Frank

Frankp:

All he is doing is spraying around carb, intake, vacuum lines, etc. where there might be a vacuum leak. If a leak is present then engine will smooth out & idle up. This can be also done with water hose & will not leave any residue.
I have also used carb cleaner

------------------
"Keep it between the Bouys" & Good Luck!!!

fone_man
