Here is a follow-up to my earlier topic that got a lot of helpful replies. Heres what I checked before pulling the Quadra-Jet:
>choke is opening fully
>fuel filters are clean
>volume of fuel pump seemed okay
>no fuel leaks around carb gaskets
>no dripping of the booster venturis at idle
>I did tighten some of the screws on the top of the carb but it didnt seem to help

The problem has been this: the boat starts and warms up fine while running on a hose. When its on the water, it bogs severely at full (even half) throttle. It loads up to the point where it might not start again. Once again, it is a 1989 Mercrusier Alpha One 5.0 LX.

Ive pulled the carb and here is what I found. The two screws that hold the throttle body to the float bowl body were so loose that they almost fell out. The base gasket is the only thing that kept them out of the engine. Using the WD-40 trick, I found a small vacuum leak at the secondary throttle linkage. I also found that one of the inner air bleed tubes was blocked with crud. I dont know if its relevant but the idle mixture screws were very different, one was at 3 turns, the other at 6 turns. I am currently installing a rebuilt kit and a new brass float.

Can these issues cause the performance problems Ive been having? If not, where do I look next? And finally, what, if anything should I do about the leak around the throttle linkage?

Thanks again, JJR.
