Parsun 15hp Timing issue/question

I have a brand new Parsun 15hp two stroke outboard I purchased here in Venezuela. It was an inexpensive motor especially so because the local government subsidizes products from China.

The engine is a copy of a discontinued Yamaha engine and can use Yamaha parts.

The issue I'm having is the motor wanted to make a coughing sound, like a muffled backfire. It was not backfiring out the carb. The noise sounds like it's down in the motor's leg. I was able to vary the throttle position and find places where it happened less or not at all, as long as I stayed under about one third throttle.

I pulled the cover and tried making the mixture richer and leaner (covering the carb's intake and using a thin flat object to cover the main jet) and that made no difference.

This motor has a mechanical timing advance and I eventually tried varying the advance and found if I retarded the spark the coughing went away. What I find is that the coughing begins right at the point where at full throttle it produces the most power. So I have to adjust the spark advance to the point just below where it coughs to get the best power.

I'm assuming that what's happening is if the spark is too far advanced the ignition is occurring when the exhaust port is still open and it's firing down into the exhaust, which I'm assuming is going to do unpleasant things like flame etch the rings. So I've adjusted it so it doesn't "cough".

The timing adjustment in the mechanical linkage wasn't enough and I had to bend a little metal tab that is the timing advance mechanical stop which the timing advance linkage hits at full advance. That I wasn't able to get the timing right through the normal adjustment makes me wonder what's up.

I'm out in the jungle and have no access to a timing light, compression tester or other gear like that. The engine passes the old thumb-over-the-spark-plug-hole compression test with flying colors. That's my main test down here with outboards. If I can't hold back the compression and it comes out hard that's a passing grade.

Does anyone have any ideas other than "don't buy Chinese made outboards"? I do like the motor and it seems like a good motor. I like that it can use Yamaha parts. I figure over time it will become a Yamaha motor as I replace parts. : - )

Thanks for your comments!

maybe mail order you a Yamaha manual and work on that carb and ignition sync.
May I ask what model Yamaha did they knock off, Marshall public library may have some info

I'm not sure which model it is they copied, but if I search for older (pre 2006) Yamaha 15hp two stroke engines they are the same. It's the one with the shifter in the front of the motor, not on the side. It's pretty crafty of them to copy a discontinued model, it makes it harder for Yamaha to claim damages in patent litigation.

Thanks for the post!

patent litigation
China's the perfect bandit, they steal or knock off every good thing your intellect can come up with to build, put nasty chemicals in plastic, They loan Americans money to eat out (citi bank) :Dand you can't sue the little buggers or even send them a nasty e-mail.
Be careful with that Parsuns outboard, Chinese knock off Lifan flywheels are well know to shatter taking out pieces of leg, head, and other vital areas.

Maybe someone in the Yamy forum could ID the engine from some pictures and get you lined out on the tuning procedure.

I'm hoping that China has become the new Japan. If you're old enough you remember when "made in Japan" was a joke. Nobody's laughing now. So far, this little Parsun seems good, and with the govt subsidy it was $1500. I can't touch a Yamaha/Tohatsu/Suzuki for that here. For example, a Yamaha is another $850.

Hopefully my flywheel won't shatter!

I think my timing is good. No more coughing, and if I advance any more it coughs. So I found the "sweet spot". But I'm wondering why I had to move it. Funky electronics? The magnet isn't in the right spot on the flywheel?

I'm afraid your exactly right.... can you say WW3?....The Japanees knocked off USA technology first ( Yamaha ) and then we actually show them how to build everything else sometimes even under under license $$$$, so you see your Parsun actually gets its parentage from OMC who was an American company.
More than likly not a single person on that parsun assembly line will ever make enough money to buy there own product so how could they have any pride in what they do?

When you run Chinese be sure to wear a helmet...LOL

So far I like my little black motor. And the cool thing is it came with free fried rice and two egg rolls! : - )

In the Amazon, when you're traveling hundreds of miles and there's no AAA you always bring a paddle.

The fortune cookie wasn't coherent. I think it was a Chinese/English machine translation. It did say my horoscope said I would be "lucky" but the "lucky numbers" were no good here. The primitive indigenous counting system used in this area goes "one, two, many". At least the math is easy.
