Painting outdrive

I have a 97 volvo outdrive that is weathered, primarily due to the previous owner storing the boat outside. All of the original paint is intact, but I am considering shooting a coat of urethane over it to make it look a little better. Any suggestions. I have done quite a bit of body work and painting so it is a small job.

Re: Painting outdrive

If the original paint is not blistered or exfoiliated and jus' dull.....how 'bout jus some rubbing compound?. If ya still want to paint, wash THOROULY with POTENT grease remover, sand litely with 320 wet-dry with the garden hose dribbling on the surfaces till ALL surfaces show scuffing, rinse well, spray with two cans of matching brand of manufacturer spray paint. Of course you can still do the compressor and spray gun thing if ya want. If there are exposed aluminum surfaces, you must remove ALL surface corrosion down to aluminum, acid wash with alumiprep, alodine, zinc chromate, cure for a few days then spray enamel. Self etching primer can be used but it may not hold up as well as the long process.

1. Sand the areas that have chipping paint.

2. Wash the entire unit down with 50/50 solution of vinegar and water.

3. Prime with zinc chromate.

4. Apply desired finish coat.
