Anyone have any experience/suggestions on re-painting an OMC outdrive. It's 25 y/o now and starting to look a little naked.

I've heard that you need to strip it down and give the bare aluminum an acid bath b4 priming and repainting. Was hoping someone has had success (materials and techniques) a little short of an extreme acid bath.

Concept DCC acrylic urethane, by PPG. This is what Mercruiser actualy recomends for aftermarket. (I realize you are not merc.)

I would also use a good epoxy primer for aluminum.
there is an aluminum primer kit that (I think) dupont sells. You get an A & B cleaner, and then 2 parts primer.

go to www.napierenvirnomental.com
They have very effective[ and non toxic, won't burn your hands,no fumes]paintstrippers- which were originally developed for stripping aircraft [won't damage the substrate]Any recoating job debends largely on how well you prepare the surface.
