I would like to paint my outboard. I am not a painter but have read alot about it over the years. I understand that the first thing is cleaning it throughly before you do anything. Does anyone have some information on how to paint it properly?

Well, it really depends upon how far you want to go. If you just want a good looking engine, clean, then spot fill all damage. sand and prime, (zinc chromate on bare aluminum) then sand and finish coat. Now all imperfections will show up like craters and mountains so again spot fill. Wet sand with 400 grit paper and apply a final finish coat. Depending upon the paint you choose you may want to top with a clear coat.

Now, if you want a spectacular engine and are willing to invest the time and money, multiple coats of primer with wet sanding in between and multiple coats of color with wet sanding in stages up to 1000 grit are the regimin. Decals and letters give a nice finished appearance. My shtick happens to be mermaids and plastic Chrysler auto letters
