Painting an 85 Johnson 6 hp

I need to try and scrape/re-paint my lower unit on an 85 Johnson 6hp-- any thoughts on how to go about doing this and what type of paint and/or primer to use?<br /><br />Aluminum lower unit I think?? If so, can i wire brush off old paint?? How bare should I go before re-coating??<br /><br />Thanks all!!!<br /><br />Jason

Elvis,<br /><br />Yes it's aluminum alloy.<br /><br />Sand down and prime with zinc chromate. Wash before priming with a 50/50 solution of vinegar/water.<br /><br />Paint with original color available at your local John/Rude dealer or Tempo brand available at: www.westmarine.com<br /><br />West Marine has the zinc chromate too. However, the old left over OMC stuff is the best.
