Hi all,
I'm in the process of painting my trailer. I'm remove all of the rust off using a wire wheel. Not it's time to paint. Here's my question. I was thinking of priming it with Rustolium and then put a coat of Rustolium paint over it. Will the Rustolium paint hold up over the years or should I use automotive paint. Thanks.

I think automotive paint will hold up better. I plan on painting my trailer soon with truck bed liner... :)

I don't know what this Rustolium is but I paint my trailor every 5 years and use PA10 underneath water based house paint! It has worked for me thus far. Much cheaper than automotive paint and I'm told it has lasted about as long.
We have very strict warrant of fittnes examinations every 6 months and you're not allowed rust on the metal.
Ross

I repainted my trailer w/ Hammerite.
Advertised as acceptable to paint right over rust as it already has a rust inhibiter in it.

Did a rough once over w/ a wire brush and than sprayed w/ a compressor.
The trailer was mechanically sound/straight, but a little rough around the edges.
The 'hammered' texture help to mask the chipped areas of the old paint.

Have been very pleased so far.
2 yrs since painting.

http://www.hammerite-diy.com/webapp...tegoryId=255035&langId=-1&task=Exterior&produ ctId=255010&siteName=HMUK

Bought locally @ a specialty paint store.

Your trailers are inspected every 6 months?

... Need to be in the trailer inspecting business there!

Here, no inspections.

Been dunkin trailers in salt water for 34 years. Here is what I do:

1. Get rid of the rust - wire brush by hand or power - chip out ALLLLLLLLL (that enough??) "cancer." This is vital!!

2. Treat with naval jelly or any brand which contains phosphoric acid. This chemically neutralizes the rust.

3. Soak with Penatrol & let dry for a couple of days.

4. Slobber with Rustoleum or your favorite rust protecting paint.

I inspect the trailer every couple of years and do this process when needed. I just finished doing this on my 10 yr old trailer (dunked in salt water) as well as replacing the springs (coated & painted as above) and replaced all nuts & bolts with SS as they can be a bear to get off if badly rusted.

Re: painting a trailer

I've painted two trailers in the last year with Rustoleum. I sanded each down with 220 grit, applied rustoleum clean metal primer, and the sprayed standard rustoleum. The trailers look nice and the rusto definetly helps hide surface problems. My only complaing is that the rusto color coat seems soft. Next time, I may try some of the enamel hardener that Valspar sells to see if that helps.

I'm going with the Rustoleum. The auto finish is more for shine than durability.

I used rustoleum hammer finish on my trailer. Just wire brush the loose stuff and brush on. The stuff went on like molases but turned out great.

Rustoleum brushed on. If you use aerosol(sp?) it will not hold up as well. Rustoleum takes a while to fully harden. I also paint cars (hobby) and use car paint sprayed with hardener, I have sprayed trailers in the past using car paint w/hardener, it also works well. For the average person with no sprayer/compressor use brushed on rustoleum. I am interested in the por15, I will give that a try some day.

DougV>

Re: painting a trailer

Is Rustoleum the same as galvanising. My trailer is galvanised and it should outlive me.

Baldrick,

Rustoleum is a type of paint.

Galvanized means a coating put on metal (not sure of the process), galvanizing is much more durable.

Galvanized trailers don't "hold" paint well.

DougV>
