I have a question, that I've always wondered about! what would cause paint to fade and peel off lower unit ???
It is a 200 hp Johnson, 2001 year. As soon as warranty ran out paint started comeing off. And a way to fix it!

This is a trick that was first mastered by the automobile industry. Apparently the marine industry is catching up.

To fix it, you will want to thoroughly clean the affected area removing all oil, rough it up with a little steel wool or sandpaper and use a primer specific for aluminum. There are some brands manufactured specifically for marine lower units. Then you will want to topcoat with the color of your choice!
