Ayuh,... Plain ole Rustoleum will stick as well as any paint will stick to a prop...

No matter what you use, it'll get rubbed off...

thats what i was thinking, how fast you think it would wear off? would it help anything or a waste of time? does the paint serve a purpose?

The paint will wear off fairly quickly regardless of how good a job is done on the painting. That is why you should not put too much time and effort into painting it.

If you want it to look pretty than paint it. Other wise it really serves no purpose.

If you are wanting to do it for looks while it is sitting on the trailer, be prepared to paint it every few uses. Won't harm anything except your time to be doing other things.

Use Etching spray can primer for aluminum before painting it and it will hold up much longer as long as you don,t bottom it out in the sand or muck. This is why I prefer a stainless prop. I have seen aluminum props decintagrate after time with no barrier protection. Merc dealer black spray paint is good stuff but expensive you might want to try it and have some for engine touch up too.

Re: paint the prop?

i think i may just go with some cheap spray paint, a light coat between trips, i can just keep it with my boat stuff in my stageing area in the garage where i keep the hitch receiver, grease gun, measure bottle and funnel where i mix 2 stroke , along with a piece of cardboard i will cut to fit around the prop, so overspray doesn't get in places it's not wanted

You can use brown paper and masking tape to cover the LU. The Self etching primer can be bought at any aoutozone or lowes home depot store. It,s only about 6 bucks and will be much more resistant to peeling or chipping of whatever paint you use. It also works great on the interior of cover plates and base plates to help gaurd against corrosion.

if the paint is just for looks, i'm not too worried, i was thinking maybe it was there to protect the prop metal, do like the look of the polished one, and i thought of going stainless but where i boat is shallow and there are rocks, so i was wanting to stay with aluminum in the hope that if i screw up i lose a prop and keep the lower.

Re: paint the prop?

update, i had the prop off to check on the size, i need to reprop but the wife had a hissy when i told her, she likes the prop i have just fine so i may have to wait till my birthday or something:facepalm: so while it was off i sprayed it with some krylon fusion i had from another project, i have since been out twice all day and it looks like it did right after i painted it, i am curious how many outings it will take to wear off. i really expected it would wash off the 1st time i went wot

The best time to paint the prop is the day before you take the pictures to sell the boat on Craig's List.
