I have a 1958 16' trailer that is in need of a paint job. My plan is to have it sandblasted ($125) and then either paint it or have it powercoated.

What is your thoughts? Paint or Powercoat?

John

I believe powder coat has to be baked on. I dont know if you can get the trailer in the oven. I'm not tryin to be smart, I just dont know if a paint oven(used to bake paint on a car) would get hot enough for powder coat. I also think paint would cost a lot less. But If it could be powder coated, it would be tougher than paint.

They tell me they do them all the time - and they can fit it in their oven. Have to remove all lights - wiring and rollers -- anything that would melt.

Dang, learn something new everyday! If the price is close, I'd go powdercoat. Its tougher.

if your going to powdercoat the trailer talk to the powercoat person first cause they are real touchy about how they sandblast stuff.dont go sandblast then take trailer to them it will cost you more $$$ in the long run powdercoat it will be cheaper than buy paint trust me auto paint is $$$$$$.i just painted a 58 chevy truck base& clear and etch primer was 800.00 to 1000.00 powdercoat it..........

Next time on my trailer I'm going to prime, paint and then overcoat with spray-on bedliner.

I've been watching it's performance in a few test areas and am very impressed so far. No rust is appearing at all after several years despite saltwater launches and sitting out in a coastal environment.

Downside to the bedliner is that if it ever starts rusting it will be tough to remove.

Re: Paint or Powercoat?

i redid my trailer . i completly stripped it then had it blasted and painted with a zinc chromate primer . then had a coat of perfection over it . im kinda leary of powder coating . although im about to have some done . colors tend to fade in the examples ive seen. any way you will need to take off springs ,fenders ,tires ,sliders ,brake hardware etc . then i sugest painting it with some rust converter before having it sand blasted . grind out the pits first etc.

Personally if you are not coating the inside of the trailer your wasting your money. The inside also rusts but is not seem.

I would use whatever is cheaper. Powder will last longer than paint but its still gonna rust.

Re: Paint or Powercoat?

It would certainly be a BIG oven to have it powder coated but I guess it could be done. Conversion temp for powder is 400F so everything not metal must come off. One thing to consider is the ability to touch up the finish down the road. Powdercoat can not effectively be touched up liquid applied paints can. Personally I done think it would be worth the time, effort or expense to powder coat it. If it were me I would sandblast and choose a good quality rust preventing paint.

The whole trailer is made out of I-Beams -- so there is no "Inside" that I can think of.

The name of the place in Arizon that has the big oven is "Gorilla"

well when the falls off dont say i told you so ive powered coated many thing you cant beat it ive painted all kinds of things like trailers paint does not last.when you drive your trailer down the road it going to chip then its going to rust before you get home.powered coating will not chip.we use on a circle track car and at the end of the theres no chips if the frame was painted the paint would all be off even if you use ZINC CHROMATE primer that just a rust protector not chip protector.
