Paint or decal?

I am currently repainting my 1985 Islander and I want to go with the white blue patters of the late eighties and nineties. But how are the blue parts done? Are they complete large decals or are they painted on with decals around the border line?
If they are decals, where can I get them?
Thank you,Rolmops.

Not know exactly what you are asking about, I searched for your boat and seen a few with different designs. If it is the three shades of blue strips, then paint is my opinion. It looks harder to do then actuality. You can click on my engine rebuild and see how you can paint nice looking designs with out much effort. Post a picture of what you are wanting to do so we can offer better suggestions... JMHO!

Thank you for your response.
I called Starcraft Marine and they told me that all the color patterns on their boats are vinyl decals. They also told me that they do not stock any of the older decals and the suggestion is that I go look for a local vinyl printer to make what I am looking for. So I tried West Marine and they asked me to send pictures of what I want and for a (hefty) price they are willing to make my decals.A price that is a bit too stiff in my opinion.
My artistic capabilities as far as painting is concerned are those of a blind monkey,so it really looks like it has to be vinyl decals unless they cannot be made in the fashion that I am looking for.

Find a local wrap company and take them your boat and a good pix of what you want your's to look like.

They can make it, and although it won't be cheap, it should be much more reasonable then west was.

Wolfs Marine in Benton Harbor MI has old stock graphics and stripes, at least they had them the last time I was there. You might also check your local Starcraft dealer.

No idea on pricing.
