hello,

my 250 oceanrunner lower unit is not looking so good anymore and I wish to grind and paint it so it looks better again. Can you give me advice on what is a good and proven method for this kind of maintenance?

- what sand paper to use?
- what kind of paint as first layer?
- different paint on top?

I just do not know and appreciate all response.

Re: paint lower unit

For any pitting you plan on filling. use MarineTex.

Bare aluminum should be wiped down with acetone and then sprayed with a self etching primer.

Many people use tractor/industrial alkyd enamel with a hardener. Limited color selection, but it wears well.

Sand until smooth. Wipe with acetone or paint thinner. Prime with green Zinc Chromate spray paint, paint with matching gloss spray paint. Don't drag the gearcase thru the sand anymore.

I paint mine every year, since I drag it thru the sand every year.....

Re: paint lower unit

ok, getting the etch primer and zink chromate and johnson white tomorrow - looked up the description on Acid#8:

"Under normal circumstances it is not necessary to flat ACID #8 and can be directly overcoated.
ACID #8 may be overcoated directly with top coat.
However, if the repair requires additional build primer filler should be used before topcoat is applied."

Do you agree I can skip the zink chromate? Or should I use it?

Stop, don't buy anything just yet! :attention:

Not knowing what type boat you have (fiberglass or aluminum) you don't need both Zinc Chromate and Self Etching primers. Usually one OR the other.

If your hull is fiberglass, you don't need either one of those primers. So for fiberglass use a good quality filling primer (usually called High Fill) and then you can sand it to a very smooth finish before applying the paint. If you have an aluminum hull, pick either Zinc Chromate OR Self Etching primers for the first coat and then follow that with again the high fill regular primer and sand to a very nice smooth finish before applying the paint. If you have some serious gouges or deep scratches, those will need filled and feathered and primed as well...

The actually finish will be determined by the primed finish. If you take your time and make the primer finish very smooth and clean, then the paint finish will look amazing as well. Paint doe not cover any imperfections in the primer finish. If you can see it or feel it, it will be most obvious when you apply the paint...

adg, Just sand it smooth and spot prime using a spraycan of the green zinc chromate primer and then overcoat with the white. The zinc chromate primer is a little better than regular metal primer.

I wouldn't go grinding anything. It's a lower unit that goes underwater. No need to mess with it.

But if you must, use the right paints (as suggested) so you don't go dissolving your metal. And if the boat is moored with antifouling paint, even more succeptible to reactions due to electrolysis.

Skegs aren't supposed to have paint on them, at least not around here.

You're lucky to have sand- where I am, the granite might be sand in a few billion years, but currently, any contact usually removes a lot more than paint.
