I have a 2003 Johnson 25 hp. The paint is flaking badly and leaving the bare aluminum showing. The previous owner stated that he was told BRP had a problem with paint that year. Anyway, I am thinking about wire brushing the flaking paint the best I can, spray white primer on the outboard and then follow up with coats of gloss white. Anybody have any input for me?

make sure you use zinc chromate or another primer for aul. or it will not stick to metal.

Re: Paint flaking and repainting advice

I repainted mine a few years ago and had a similar problem, take a paint scraper and go over the paint, the loose stuff will fall off and then you will know what to wire brush, if it doesn't come off leave it go.

Once you get all the lose off take some 320-400 sand paper and feather the edges so you can't see them when you paint and hit it with the etching primer, zinc chromate, you can get it at any auto parts store for a couple buck and you absolutely must use it or the paint will just peel off again.

While at the parts store the have a line of Duplicolor spray cans for cars that work really well, it is pretty durable paint and is what I used on mine.
