i thought id get crushed with info quickly on this in the resto section but nothing yet. i figured since its a starcraft id post it here ..:D --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
im making plans to start my aluminum starcraft resto. what paint should i use ? and what primer ? i was told of a guy today that will blast all the paint off my boat and when its done it should have somewhat of a texture to it ... if so, i should be able to use reg primer ( non-etching ) as there will aready be a surfce to adhere to. does this sound right ? what primer do you guys suggest ? also what paint ? the boat is not going to be sitting in water all the time unless i can find a deal on a slip next summer. is there a diff paint to use for boats that DO stay in the water ( river .. no salt ) im not restoring a show boat or yacht so $200/gal paint in not needed ..im looking for a decent economical paint also .. to do a 2 coat coverage in an 18 ft v hull .. how much paint should i need ? thanks guys scott

I have used Rustoleum and it is holding up pretty good on the transom. I have not used any primer as of yet but when I paint the main part I believe I will need this special primer for aluminum for the bare parts.

I have done some investigating about blasting. Doing it to aluminum is tricky if you use traditional blasting media. It can warp the aluminum. I have seen restorers on this list that use walnut shells to blast around the rivets and then sand the rest.

I just bought shells at Harbor Freight to do some of my Jet.

Just FYI:)

scott, most of the crew used rustoleum. i used interlux topside because i got it for free. no primer besides a zinc chromium primer wherever there is bare aluminum.

Scott if you strip the hull bare you need to use the Zinc first then any other primer will go with the paint you choose , I used Rustoleum aluminum Grey primer under my regular rustoleum oil based paint on mine . Andy as well as North Beach used Interlux paints ( I think NB used interlux ) :D.Bret is using a combination of paints on his EZ used rustoleum sscheafer used boat paints. I think its mostly a matter of preferance and how much you want to spend on paint . I have less than $200.00 invested in paint and prep materials . I would bet North Beach and sscheafer invested quite a bit more in theirs and we all Know Andy got lucky on his paint price :D.

Your factory paint is in good shape physically and not peeling or flaking so I would just scuff it up and paint over it. If I remember the transom is a little rough so you may want to really sand that down but that's about it.

thats what i decided to do EZ. i still may see about having soneone blast the stern where all those rivets are and all the other rivets aswell ... will save alot of sanding. i might be able to borrow one of those portable blasters and do the walnut shell thing like northbeach did .. so thats another option. the big thing now is deciding if i want to use a bottom side paint or not ? i cant imagine that the paint on the boat now had any kind of special paint on the bottom. if i DO NOT use a bottom side and then keep it in the water ... what should i expect ? im going either 2nite or tomorrow night to talk to a guy that has alot of paint experience on high end ( cigarette ) offshore type boats. ill see what he thinks too. scott

Scott, when I saw it at Lowes, it was in it's own dedicated little rack hanging near an end cap. Of course no guarantee all Lowes will have it or that they still carry it, but I definitely did see it!

I had the same trouble locating it where I am. I called 6 local stores listed on the Rustoleum website as carrying the marine line and none of them did. One however, told me to go to Doitbest.com and I could order what I needed and it could be shipped to their store for free, so that's what I did. The catch is that it's not fast. It comes in with their next shipment and said it could take up to 14 days. The store calls you when it arrives. You need to check with your local store to see if they accept shipments ordered from Doitbest.com, not all of them do.

Most of the local stores I called never heard of the marine line.

CBG, I used a topside paint on the bottom of the liquid limo and during our two weeks at the lake, by the middle of the second week, the paint below the waterline was about a thousand tiny blisters. After a few days dry, the blisters went away.

Re: paint and primer ??

I am going to use some primocon underwater primer for alum. boats, then coat with bottom paint (for alum. boats). I did not go with topside paint because the boat will be in the water for 1-10 days at a time, also always in saltwater. I have not time on this paint job because I am starting it this week. I plan to use the primer on the bare alum. only coat with bottom paint. I have bare alum. where the bunks are and some other wear spots. Plan to paint all these spots this year, see how the paint and primer combo hold up next year and probably paint the whole bottom fall of 2010.

Pettit epoxy makes a much better paint than rustoleum, there are no blister worries that you all speak of and it does not chip easy and the finish holds up for a very long time. I restored a 67 14 ft Holiday ten yrs ago with the pettit epoxy and i have not had to repaint since. Uv rays do not fade this paint for whatever reason. I spent 28 dollars on a quart and put two coats on my boat and it never looked better.

dfarr did you use a primer ? (for the bare spots, i'm sure right? ) but how about where there was the original paint? and did you have paint on the top section? mine's bare metal.. I'm thinking of going blue.
