Dhadley,

I thought I would post separately regarding my Evinrude.

I recently changed my water pump about 5 hours ago and I am not happy with it. Doing installation I crushed the new gasket but used sealer and it looked OK. Water was stronger at the tell tale but not gushing. A separate discussion on water pressure we joined in on suggested it is low pressure system.

The mechs who rebuilt my engine said thay had altered the pipes in the head to improve cooling which meant that the outlet from the tell tail would be reduced. I couldn't really understand what they said.

Last night I noticed the outlet was barely dripping, even when I revved the engine. When I disconnected one of the piped into the outlet I was just getting air.

When I run the engine I get pressurised water being forced out beteen the lower unit and shaft face where the bolts are. Is this normal? I am thinking that maybe I am losing pressure at the pump itself??

No real problem to drop the LU again but I need to know what I am looking for and also to understand the workings of the cooling system more.

When the engine was running the cyclinders wre not overly hot and the water temp from the outlet was OK too.

Pannet, your engine is an 1990? How does your outlet compare?

For others, my engine is a 1989 Evinrude VRO (disconnected) 140. I would appreciate comparisons.

Thanks

NG

Re: Paging Dhadley and Pannet

Dear NGRIFF1,

I have a continuous stream of water coming from the water pump indicator tube. I also have a water pressure guage on my boat. It read 5 psi when idle at 600 rpm and 10-15 psi when running from 1,000-5,500 rpm. I changed the impeller, gasket, o-ring and seal 8 months ago because my motor was left unused for many years before I bought it.

I think you may have leakage of the water pump housing / grommet so you have water coming around LU and less water coming from the indicator hose.

You also mentioned that the mechanics altered the water hoses. The water hoses on my motor are standard and I never have an over heat problem caused by the cooling system even in a hot summer ( except when the weed obstructed the water inlet window ). I think you should use the original setting.

The flow of water in the pee hose also work as a venturi pump to pump the water out off the lower motor cover in case the water does get inside otherwise you may have a flood inside the cover.

Re: Paging Dhadley and Pannet

It seems like a pressure guage is a good idea. I have no idea where to place though. I have looked at various posts and even a schematic from schematic. I don't really wish to drill into the block so I must find where n the pipework to tee into. If I simply go on the taill pipe I think the pressure there is too low.

When the mechs altered the pipework they said they diverted the flow in some way to imprive cooling.

Looks like I may have to drop my LU to check. Another post I read suggested the exhaust gasket just below to power head.

Thanks

Re: Paging Dhadley and Pannet

They probably unhooked the throttle control water valve. Thats OK as long as they did it correctly. I prefer the set up on the newer V4 loopers like the 1994.

You are correct about the pressure showing low if your gauge taps into the overboard line. On the loopers there is a threaded hole on the starboard side of the adaptor plate. Your water pressure gauge hose goes there.

A gauge is a good idea otherwise we are only guessing at water pressure.

Thanks for the updates!

Dhadley,

Is it mormal to have water spraying out of the LU?

What about the exhaust gasket? I had a mother of a job getting that to stay on as I was refitting.

And last silly question please, where is the adapter plate.

Thanks

NG

Yes it is normal to have some water coming out where the lower unit amd the mid section meet. To say its too much and is a problem is difficult to say. Its easy enough to drop the lower and check the pump. Especially the grommet where the tube goes in the pump housing.

The adaptor plate is what the powerhead sits on. Look for a small plug on the starboard side. If I remember correctly, it takes an allen wrench to remove the plug.

Good luck!
