We're looking at boats and there's a whole slew of them in NJ but we live in southeastern PA. Anyone know how sales tax works in PA for boats purchased in other states (both used or new)? I though I heard somewhere that PA requires paying tax on the purchase again (after paying tax in the other state already) is that true?

Surprised no answers to this. Bumping it back to the top so it doesn't get missed by all the weekend boaters just getting home...

When you register the boat, you will be required to pay 6% sales tax on the bill of sale price---unless it is obviously lowballed, like 100 bucks for a 1990 20 foot hull.

However, if you have a reasonable price stated, the Motor vehicle license store will accept it.

If the hull is newer than (I think) 1978, then you will need a title in order to transfer the boat to your name. It is always preferable to have the (Jersey) registration in addition to title and bill of sale.

The trailer is licensed separately and fee is according to weight. You can register a trailer for 6 years by paying the 6 year's fee but you save the yearly fuss and bother. Again, you need the bill of sale, the registration and title. Sometimes you can get away with less but they seem to be getting a bit more fussy lately. So since it will be at least an hour drive, it would be preferable to get the all paperwork before you leave.

You pay the tax when you title it. So if you buy it in Jersey then bring it into PA, you'll pay the tax when you get the PA title. You won't have to pay any tax in Jersey unless you title and register it there. You probably WILL have to pay 2 notary fees though since you'll have to have the seller sign the boat over to you at a notary in Jersey then come here and complete the process in PA.
