Oxygen sensor removal?

I have a 200 hp HPDI. I was attempting to clean my oxygen sensor and I couldn?t loosen the sensor? From what I?ve read, I should loosen the sensor before removing the housing from the engine. I took a 7/8 sensor wrench (the long one with the opening down the side) but it didn?t fit completely over the nut. At the time I assumed it was because I needed a metric size socket. But after thinking about, I figure the space between the nut and the housing was too narrow for the socket to fit over the nut.

So what do I need to do to loosen it? Do I need 22mm or should a 7/8 work? If the socket won?t fit over the nut, what can I do? If I remove the housing with out loosing the sensor, how do I remove the sensor without damaging the housing or sensor?

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks

Re: Oxygen sensor removal?

If the O2 sensor is anything like the automotive type, they make a special tool for removal. I bought mine at Harbor Freight for a couple of bucks.

I removed the housing 10mm bolts and then clamped it in a vise.
Make sure you use new gaskets for the housing.

Re: Oxygen sensor removal?

the ONLY way to correctly clean the sensor and draw tube is to REMOVE the O2 sensor AND holder AND draw tube.
simply no other possible way.
most automotive 22mm or 7/8ths sensor tools are to thick to get between the sensor hex and the holder. you may have to grind the automotive version for clearence.
theO2 sensor MUST be cleaned AND tested in accordance to the tech bullitens. its not in the service manuals.
the flame test is useless and should be disreguarded.
you will also need a torque wrench to properly seat the gasket on the sensor without distorting the sensor body.
at least on HPDI if the sensor fails it just makes the engine run like nasties, OX66the sensor can cause piston failure.
you will need the test harness and a digital voltmeter for proper testing after cleaning and reinstallation.
all output voltage testing must be done with the gearcase submerged, the engine in fwd gear and after a 10 minute or so engine warmup period.
I prefer a mid RPM 10 min run before testing to insure valid O2 sensor output voltage readings.
simply isnt any other way to maintain this part of the fuel control system.
