Dad got a new-to-him boat, a 1979 Sea Nymph 165 (70hp Johnson). It didn't come with an owner's manual and he would like to have one. Is there a place I can buy one or download one? Thanks.

Welcome aboard.

While you're looking for what is probably non-existent, what do you need help with?

He just mentioned wanting the owner's manual and we thought we'd get one for him.

There might have been an owners manual, but it wasnt really a useful tool like a new cars manual w lots of info.

Significantly more basic then that, bow is the front pointy bit, the transom is the back flat part the motors attached to...

the spinning part at the back is the prop

Plus basic PFD usage and maybe, just maybe, some basic navigation bouys...

It wouldnt have had any info in it about the motor, its usage or operation. Wasnt built or installed by the SeaNymph factory. Dealer &/or buyer made the motor decision.....

Info now readily available online....

Never too old to take a boaters course if they're offered near you

Get a service manual for the outboard, thats an incredibly helpful manual, but it wouldnt have come w the boat originally.....

The owner's manual for a 70 HP Johnson should be readily available, Google it. If the motor came as OEM on the boat it should have been included. There is nothing on the boat that should require a manual.

My wife found the original owners manual to her father's '87 Sea Nymph, jbcurt00 hit it on the head, there is really nothing useful in it that pertains to the outboard, controls on it, or how to use them. I might try scanning the manual in and find a home for it, IF there isn't copywright information on it that would deny permission to do that.

Thanks...I'll delete the page for now, but the company is no longer in business, so, I'll try and follow up with trying to get in touch with the printer. I thought as long as the entire thing gave them credit it was okay to at least view....

Ok...as promised I contacted National Marine Manufactures Association who holds the copyright on the Sea Nymph owners manual I mentioned in previous posts.

I sent an email to Ellen Hopkins Bradley -Senior Vice President, Marketing and Communications & Chief Brand Officer who responded;
"...since there is a copyright, would be that you not post it on a webpage and instead scan it in and email it directly to the person seeking the owner’s manual."

She forwarded my email to Scott Berry Director, Engineering Standards who also kindly responded with;
"...Ellen forwarded your request onto me for review.

Personally, I do not see any issues with sharing the owner’s manual of a 1979/1987 Sea Nymph. Manufacturers are only required to keep the first purchaser documentation for 10 years and typically maintain this practice with all related documentation.

Keep in mind, the manual will not account for the various design or part changes over the years.

I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any additional questions.
"

MOD EDIT - Removed text. contact them directly (i.e. google "National Marine Manufactures Association" as they produced the owners manual for Sea Nymph) and see if they have an archived copy of the manual you can get.

Defunct business or not it is still copyrighted. How long has Elvis been dead? And NMMA isn't the one to give permission. They wrote it for Sea Nymph and don't own it.

Do what you want, but don't post about it. iBoats can't and won't be involved.

Not trying to be obtuse here...I won't say anymore about this, but, in my eyes/reading of this NMMA clearly owns the copyright....

Obviously that is not a Sea Nymph Owner's Manual, rather a generic guide. Get something in writing, not an email, an official release with permission.

Actually, for iBoats to legally post it the release of copyright would have to be a release to iBoats directly (or at least naming iBoats) from the copyright holder. It's not so much that the copyright holder WILL do anything, it's that the exposure is there if they DECIDED to do something for iBoats.

Copyright can be kind of weird that way.

But, even the emails from the people at NMMA doesn't act as a release of copyright. (Again, technicalities) The issue for iBoats is exposure. Much like the MarCom VP said, don't post - email directly. Depending on the amount of information posted there is the possibility that you may manage to fall under the fair use clause posting in the open forums, but by scanning full pages the answer is likely not. Direct sharing keeps it in the clear.
