Overzealous Game Warden

A freind of mine relayed this story to me last week.

My freind was fishing Lake Mead for Stripers. It seems that Lake Mead has a "one pole, in the water, per person" law.

It seems that the game warden was watching him and pounced when he hooked another line that had obviously been sunk (covered with moss) and dragged in another pole attached to that line. It was obvious that the pole had been underwater for a long time.

The Game Warden said "no exceptions" and wrote him an expensive ticket.

I asked him why he didn't fight it, he said: "I was so mad I'm afraid I would have said something I shouldn't have in court and get cited for contempt too".

What a rip!

I had a similar experience in Minnesota. That's how the topic came up.

My son and I were trolling (one pole each) yet I had another out with no hook, sinker or anything, just the line. I was trying to get the twist out of the line.

I also got a ticket. I did fight it and the judge said; "no exceptions-$278.00.

My son hasn't fished since.

He was turned off by the sheer rudeness of the female Game Warden.

My father was a Game Warden/Wildlife Biologist in Michigan. He never treated anyone that way. He ALWAYS tried to give people an "out". Unless it was blatant and deliberate, or they were drunk.

Alcohol, and firearms do not mix.

Enforcing the letter of the law and not the spirit of the law shows contempt for those covered by the law.

wonder what would have hapened if he through it back? catch and release those wild poles! there is a lake near me that I will not fish at for just the other reason, they don't entorce any of there many, many, many laws on the lake. you need a permit to fish on it, but when I was there over half the people did not have the permit! oh, its a $200.00 fine to leave a foot print in the mud! book says 2 poles with 2 hooks, sign says 1 pole with one hook!
I hate it when its cheaper to be wronged by the law than to fight it and set it right!

Fish with dynamite! When the warden says that it is against the law, light a stick and hand it to him. Then ask him if he is going to just talk or fish! :D

About 18 years ago I tried to go fishing without a license. Got busted and paid my fine. A year past and fished again without a license. Yep, got busted again. Now 16 years later with me getting a license every year, I have never been asked for me to show it. Go figure......But I will always get a license from now on.

I'm starting to think that the game wardens should have video for their proof of violations just as traffic cops do. Well, I know I won't be going to lake Mead for sure! Doubt if I would have anyway!

we get that all the time here. 3 times while net fishing the mental giants gave us tickets then told us to hold them while the NC state atty decided if the tickets were valid. that is why I quit commercial fishing. you had to spend to much time with lawyers and meetings.
you must remember the quality of people you get for 20 grand and less per year. most do it cause I dont think they could do anything else. pay peanuts ya get monkeys but in this case the monkeys get to run wild.
good luck keep your paper work and retain a lawyer :)
