I just received a catalog in the mail from Overton's. On the 2nd page they state "Discount Boating Accessories" and "Additional Savings on Already Low prices!"

I thumbed through it and spotted a Garmin GPSMAP 172C that I have an interest in. Their price is $679.99. I have seen this unit at a number of places for under $500.00. I don't mind a dealer making a profit in the least but this seems a bit much.

Let the buyer beware.

On any given item, one vendor may beat the others. I bought a macerator pump from Overtons for 33% less than the other mainstream vendors, yet some of their prices are higher. Go figure.

It pays to shop around for the more expensive items.

Re: Overtons Pricing

I heave Overtons catalogs anymore:

I purchased one of their best Gladiator covers for my boat last year ... about $400 and two weeks later, the plastic clip buckles began breaking. When I called to ask them to just replace the buckles, they indicated I could buy a new buckle kit but they don't consider the buckles within their warranty parameters. I e mailed them and didn't even receive their consideration for a response. Too bad because I have several things to order for my boat this season but they aren't getting anymore of my $$$.

Gotta watch those big catalogs...

I get both the Overton's book and the West Marine book. Both are excellent reference books that will tell you what is out there and generally how much. I have found that almost 100% of the time I can find a better price though. And I mean "better" by a good margin.

They sure do have it all though. But, I don't blindly pay their prices. The last two new items I bought were a Teleflex steering system and a new Tempest Plus prop. West Marine listed it at $239, I paid under $150 from an online dealer. The prop ran me $225 with shipping on E-bay. So there you go.

UFM82

Re: Overtons Pricing

I ordered a bimini top from them last year. Had it shipped 2 day so I would have it for my vacation. It arrived and all that was in the box was the canvas. No hardware. No poles. Nothing else. I called them and they at first didn't believe me, but ultimately agreed to overnight another complete top to me so I would be able to install it before my vacation. All ended well but it was some aggrivation I could have done without.

way back when overtons was the place to go to get all kinds of hard to find salom and trick skis but like everyone who grows to mega mall size the personal touch is long gone

tommays

Thanks to all you who continue to consider iboats.com when you are shopping for marine anything. We are amazed that many board members still don't even know we sell stuff (what keeps our doors open). We will try to continue to earn your business with pricing, service and selection. -End of self promotion ;)

Re: Overtons Pricing

I was glad to see that iBoats undercut Overton's price by such a large margin. I just ordered a bimini from iBoats and their price beat all by $20.00. Not a lot on a $300. item but I'm apreciating them more and more. Way to go iBoats.

Re: Overtons Pricing

Admin5, can you help me out with explaining an issue regarding shipping costs on iBoats? I ordered a number of items a month or so ago & overall I was pleased with prices and service. I understand that things may come from different warehouses, and that each warehouse has it's own shipping charge applied. Fair enough, my order was from 2 warehouses and had enough items from each that savings were still enough to make the purchase worthwhile for me.

(I'd caution buyers to check shipping before finalizing orders; would hate to have an order where most items come from 1 warehouse but one inexpensive rogue item comes from another with additional shipping charges that cost more than the item itself.)

But here's my question: there were a couple of items (like small cans of lubricants) that would have added $4-$5 dollars to overall shipping if I had bought the item, even though they would have come from the same warehouse as a bunch of other things I ordered. I saw some items that seemed to have some kind of 'hazardous' indication which I assumed might have required different shipping method and therefore increased cost. But there was at least 1 item without such a designation (I think it was a tube of some kind of lubricant) that bumped up shipping as described above. And I did order a can of one kind of aerosol lubricant that didn't bump up shipping just by itself. Any idea as to what might cause such a big increase in shipping for some individual items (and it wasn't weight, these were regular size spray cans or small tubes)?

Thanks for any light you can shine on this issue!
