Oversized Throttle Cam Roller

I did a search (I know generally how forums work :cool:) and this question may relate to more than just a Force outboard. The throttle cam roller I have on my 85hp Force doesn't line up as needed, moving the eccentric screw gets it close but no joy. How big of an oversize diameter of the roller can I go? The one presently in place is 3/8" OD. I was looking for a 7/16" OD, no joy but found one that fit the eccentric screw that is 9/16" OD. Is that too large to be used without throwing the fuel/timing adjustments out of kilter ? I can shave it down a little if need be

It is usually something simple that may be the source of your problem. Have you posted this question in the Force Forum? Any pictures?

Thanks for the reply Willy. No, no pictures of the roller or cam and I did pose the question on a couple of forums, no answer. I'm in the middle of rewiring the helm and all the systems onboard and adding what would be needed for a 2nd battery so I can't run the engine. I've taken the roller and with my drill motor and some sandpaper and shaved down the nylon piece to between 1/2 and 7/16, judging from the original roller 7/16 was the needed target for the roller and cam mark to line up and touch per the instructions in the manual for setting the throttle, if need be, I can polish it down a little more. I'm taking my time with all of this to make sure it's as right and correct as possible, carbs have been overhauled, fuel and water pumps rebuilt, new rubber fuel lines from the tank and all over the engine

It sounds like you have a complete understanding of the fuel/timing adjustment requirements necessary to get that old beauty running correctly. My only suggestion is to use the remote control to advance the throttle when making the cam roller adjustment in order to account for any other wear in the rest of the linkage. Also, don't forget to verify that the adjustment selected provides for wide-open throttle at max travel. Good luck!

And Thanks again Willy, I don't mean to come across as any type of expert on this but I have done my own wrenching on all my vehicles since I was a kid, starting with bicycles and now a classic Mercedes coupe. My first boat I bought from one of my Uncles, it had a 45hp Monkey Wards Sea King aka Chrysler 45 outboard and I set the timing on it with a school protractor. It started every time on the first hit (the 2nd one if I forgot to push in for the choke). This Force outboard I have now was running pretty well but for my peace of mind I wanted to go through everything. I honestly don't know how it was running with the fuel pump the way it was

now fixed. The wiring in the helm was another nightmare I'm addressing, there was wires (mostly red and black) running all over. I pirated the control cable from another boat I had and now will have a diagramed wiring chart with colors of wires and what they are for tied to a switch panel with breakers instead of fuses

, adding a 2nd "house" battery for lights when night fishing. Taking my time with this as the lake 5 miles down the road is still down for the winter.

Seeing as this boat is so old, a 1961 model, I've got an old Morse control I was thinking of swapping in. It is in excellent shape and works well, I see what you mean about using the controller for any "slop" in the system

Thanks for sharing how you got to this point with your project. We have very similar backgrounds. I agree that it is amazing how these old two-strokes will continue to start and run reasonably well even-though there may a bad component like a fuel pump. Great work on the helm. Please post your final results with the fuel/timing cam follower challenge. Good luck!

I've got another post thread here titled "New Boat For Christmas" that I've been posting to as well. This thread was for the roller issue and I think I have it solved, just can't check until I get the electrics finished so I can run the engine. I discovered and fixed a helm seat issue yesterday, better now than while bouncing down the lake
