8 people, 50HP on a light tinny ?? At least in 5 ft of water they could walk the dumb a-s-s-e-s back to shore......

No charges will be filed in a Saturday morning boating accident that threw eight people overboard into the Indian River near Parrish Park in Titusville, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has announced.

The boat ? a 16-foot aluminum rowboat-type vessel with a 50-horsepower motor ? took on a wave in rough seas and sank in about 5 feet of water, said Joy Hill, FWC regional spokeswoman.

A good Samaritan rescued the boat?s occupants.

?Luckily, everyone survived without even any injuries. The lesson here is, don't risk going on the water when the wind and water are high unless you have the experience and proper vessel to handle such conditions,? Hill said.

?This could have been a disaster,? she said.

Overloading may have played a factor, the FWC determined. Because the boat sank, investigators cannot determine what safety equipment was on board, Hill said.

I would hardly call a 50 in a 16 foot boat overpowered.

My 16' Starcraft SS tinny is rated for 85hp max...

Number of passangers and total weight is most likely the cause of this accident.

I am more curious how they could not tell what safety equipement was onboard due to it sinking in 5' of water. Were they too lazy to walk out there and bend over and feel or just look around. Or were they more worried that everything floated away so the depth does not matter. Again, 5' of water and they had to be rescued. Amazing.

I'm with you on that one.... 5 feet of water doesn't seem like much at all. You would think that they would go back there and pick up the boat. Maybe it is one of those things where after it sinks you need a permit to go in and recover it.

Re: Overpowered and overloaded, Maybe ??

i have a 15foot boat that is rated to 45hp. of course i put a mercury 500 on there:D

boat handles fine. i will not defiantely put anymore horses on the boat but my boat handles in 20-30mphs winds great. just really i mean really bumpy:eek: but no sign of sinking or being over the weight limit. my boat is remote steering. 4 people max of i would say 650 pounds with gear max.

now 8 people is a lot for even a 16foot boat. i should say not overpowered if it was a boat that has remote steering but over the weightlimit. sitting way to low.
