Anyone seen or ever overpowered a 20ft pontoon rated for 90hp. Recently purchase 2000 fisher dlx with a 150 hp johnson. Was looking at replacing it with a 90hp. As far as weight there is maybe 30lb diverence from the 90hp to 150hp. Not sure if I should leave it or go ahead replace it?

honestly?...depends on the kinda person you are....
after learning about pontoons, ratings, capacities, etc., I'd not want an overpowered pontoon. But I'm a mostly manual following type.....
I wouldn't buy a used pontoon that had been overpowered......

Well since it's already over powered and you want to bring it back to 90hp sell the 150 get the 90 . Although I probably wouldn't...

Been messing with pontoons a LONG time. My first was a new '78 24' Crest.

If I were looking at a 150 on the back of a 'toon, I would be REAL interested in just how well the engine pod was fastened to the rest of the boat, AND the condition of the transom. If that all looked OK (I've seen some really scary stuff here), it would be about how the boat floated in the water at rest. Looking for the back of the boat to float no lower than half the diameter of the tube....

looked at a used pontoon for a friend years ago.....before I knew what I know now.......18' or close to it...wasn't all that old....
There was a pontoon, newer , similar model in the driveway.....with the corvette and other nice vehicles...
was selling the older one......took the engine cowl off, was looking at a birds nest. Pontoon was definitely uncared for....obviously didn't care...
transom was cracked in multiple places.....the motor didn't look to big for the toon....but like I said , I basically knew nothing compared to what I know now.....
I wonder now if he ran the thing over motored....

Transom and boat over all is in great shape. Looked at a couple 90hp and as far as weight goes there is about 30lb to 50 lb diverence with some newer models even exeeding what the the weight of 150hp is.
So my asumption is the boat is fine carying the weight but I am worried about the amount of hp and flex that the motor will produce as far as transom goes.
