Hi all,
My buddy has a 40hp merc outboard and it overheated on him the other day.
(oops serial#5899159) he changed the water pump impeller last year in the spring and ran it all last year with no problems and got it out for the first time this year and it overheats any ideas? He said there are water hoses going to his fuel pump and was wondering what those might be for?One more thing can anyone tell me if this is a 1980 or an 1981 model?
Thanks in advance for your time

Re: overheating

there are no water hoses going to your fuel pump. at the most one hose coming from fuel tank, one from engine block for vacuum, and one going to carburetor.
i'm no expert but it could be a stuck thermostat if your engine has one, or the impeller in the water pump could still be bad, especially if it were ever run out of water even for a short time. dirt dobbers could be clogging up your telltale hole so check everything for obstruction, even the lower unit water intake ports. --serves you fellas right for not going hunting and fishing enough and sitting that motor up-- it probably got lonely and is telling you about it.
hope you get 'er fixed

Re: overheating

Thanks JB it was the impellar i went over and we started the process of flushing the water system and a chunk of the impellar came out so we pulled the lower unit and surprise no fins on the impeller.
