Ive got a mid 80's 30 Hp Yamaha. I was told it ran fine, but now im not so sure. When i ran the engine with water going through it, the boat wouldnt run without full warm up, and choke, as i kept running it, it got eworse till it wouldnt go, and just made a beeping sound from the throttle, i assume this is telling me it over heated, as it was extreemly hot to touch. Water was comming out of the telltale the first time, and this mornig i tried again, and it sputtered out. Again it just stopped from heat. We oulled out the thermostat as it was completly corroded, but it had no affect. I noticed some water dripping from the engine block on one side, Is it the impellor? Or what? Please help.

Re: Overheating Yamaha

First thing to check is the Waterpump impeller in the lower unit! Has it been replaced in the last several years?

It also sounds like the carbs need a good cleaning and a rebuild kit installed.

Re: Overheating Yamaha

How do you know the impeller's OK? When was it changed? Most overheating problems are caused by failed/worn impeller (or other water pump parts) or blockage, followed by failed thermostat(s).

If you drop the lower unit, you can check for blockages with either compressed air or water. Sounds like the motor hasn't had much maintenance, given the tstat condition. You may find caked up salt in the cooling passages.

Since the motor is obviously overheating, you need to stop trying to use it normally until the situation is corrected, or you will destroy the powerhead.
