Overheating problems

Just took a boat I bought to the lake yesterday. The previous owner told me that the boat ran hot during idle. I replaced the impeller and found out that someone put the wrong size impeller in the boat, then I checked the thermostat and found that it was not working. I took the thermostat out and then took the boat to the lake. It ran hot at first but then I found out that i did not fasten the hose from the water pump to the thermostat housing and that there was not water coming into the engine. I put the hose back on the boat and ran it for a while and the boat would never cool off under 210 degrees. I then shut the boat off to let it cool and then never cold get it started. I did notice a small water leak coming from the thermostat housing. Also it showed that there was not oil pressure either. Any suggestions?

I have a 89 VIP VISION with a 2.3 Cobra.

Re: Overheating problems

You NEED a thermostat to make these motors cool.Without it water just runs out the back without doing nothing.
If you ran it hot you could have done all kinds of damage to that little engine.
The head could be warped the head gasket shot etc, etc.
Put the correct thermo back in and then make sure the impeller is the right one.Do a compression test then post he results.
If you should be so lucky to restart it then check for water flow from the drive FIRST!!! Then address the other problems.J

Wouldn't be surprised if you blew the head gasket when you overheated it running without water.

Re: Overheating problems

Thats what I figured. Would that cause the oil pressure gauge to show that there is no pressure?

A short list:

Bad Gauge
Bad Sender
Loose connection, bad wiring, no power or ground to gauge
No or low oil pressure

If in doubt, before doing a compression test, hook up a mechanical gauge and verify there is any oil pressure to measure...

It may have not restarted due to being vapor locked. It you was running hot, the fuel in the engine compartment will sometimes vaporize and starve the carb. It may start up fine now. Happened to me before.

Re: Overheating problems

Thanks for the info. I will check it out when I get home. Also, I noticed that it would not let me pull the throttle in reverse.
