After a couple weeks of high water in the lake I boat in I finally got my pontoon boat back in the water, for about 20 minutes! The engine just quit, turned out to be the fuel line, BUT when I got it restarted I noticed no telltale, then telltale started but only intermittantly, before I could get back to shore, the engine went into overheat mode, I ran this way for quite some time till I could get a tow.
A few questions: Is this most likely the water pump impeller? Could I have damaged the enginge, I never ran over idle? Is this a job a shop could fix ( the water pump) in an hour of labor or so?

I think you're on the right track.I'd replace the waterpump along with a new T/stat assy.Shop would probably charge you between 2-3 hours labor.

A compression check will reveal if you damaged the engine. Running an overheating engine for any length of time is never a good idea.

If your mechanically inclined, and have a manual.

Not wanting the expense, of having a shop do it for you.

Its fairly simple, and needs to be done every couple years.

You may want to do it yourself.

If you want to avoid , a surprise, waterpump problem, in the future.

Install a pressure guage, easy to route tubing on a 'toon.

I watched the video on replacing an impeller found in another similar thread - question - is there a video showing removal of the lower unit on a similar outboard?
Other problem is that my boat is 60 miles away during the week - so I only get a short time on the weekend to try to do it myself - if I dare.

Its not difficult.

Even if you've never done one.

Disconnect the shift rod, remove the 4 lower unit to exhaust housing bolts , trim tab bolt, countersunk bolt, and bolt under the trim tab.(mark the location of trim tab before removal).

Seperate gearcase from exhaust housing, and remove lower unit.

Be carefull , not to allow shift rod to turn, or get bent, etc.

I tape it , to keep it from getting turned.

Then you can go by the video.

But, I think its easier to install the impeller, into housing first, then put on drive shaft, aligning it with key.

Just make sure the fins are turned, the same way as they were.

Liquid dish soap works as well as grease to lube the impeller fins.
