Hello,
I have had a 1993 40 hp force in service for two years. The lake I use developed a algae this yr. My engine overheated but still was suppurting water. I had a new water pump installed last season. The condition at the time had this green floating fiber in the water. The screen in the lower end was pushed up at the time. Should i remove the lower unit to see if a passage is blocked, or should i buy a temp gauge and try it next season?
Thanks in advance for your advise.

Take the lower off and check for damage.Make sure the passages are clear.
Then remove the thermostat housing.
When you run in duckweed or extreme alge conditions you need to flush it on land after you use it.
That green gunk gets in the passages and clogs them up,after time it turns hard and will clog and overheat.
It can also cause hot spots on the powerhead and score the cylinders.J
