Overheating 3hp

I Have a 1993 j3retb which has given good service but is now overheating and I get steam after about five minutes.

I have changed the impeller and pump and now have the lower unit off and the upper power head. I have cleaned out the water intake, there was nothing in there anyway. Now I am not sure where to go from here. Is there a thermostat on these engines? Any ideas on what could be the problem?

Thanks for any help and advice...

What did the old water pump impeller look like ? All the pieces there ?? Run a wire up the water tube to check for any blockage. No thermostat.

The old impeller and pump were OK, as I had a new one I changed it anyway. I have cleaned out the water tube both with compressed air and by pushing a wire through it.

I have not yet removed the plate on the bottom of the power head, but looking into it, it looks clean with nothing apparently broken.

As there is no thermostat, just wondering if when I took it apart something was blocking and it fell out and I did not see it. I am tempted to put it all back together and see if it still overheats. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Yes it does have a tell tale and seems to pump OK for about five minutes and then it turns to steam as the engine gets hot.

Re: Overheating 3hp

id look into a blown head gasket

What may be other tell tale signs of a leaky or blown head gadget? There is was good compression when started but lost power as it warmed op and water turned to steam
